Can I have some advice about my cat please?

He’s a 3 year old male neutered cat who is most of the time ok. He can be stressed out with change which can cause him to pull his hair out but other than that he’s healthy
This morning he was fine my son and girlfriend were over and making a fuss of him. He left the room and my sons girlfriend came back in to say he was hissing at her.
When I went out he was growling, hissing, spitting, clawing at the floor, he looked like a wild animal and it was really scarey. It continued for 1/2 hour where he ended up cowering in the corner.
Eventually he calmed down enough that he crawled up onto my knee and snuggled in, when I move he follows, he hasn’t ate his dinner even the offer of treats have been ignored.

I don’t know if what happened this morning was normal or if he has something going on inside.
Any advice would be gratefully received and sorry fo the length.
Thanks

I would take him to the vet when it's next open to get him checked out. It could be a response to injury or infection.

BluebellTheDonkey · 25/12/2017 21:52

Do you think he could be in pain? Probably warrants a trip to the vets just to be on the safe side.

TheSecondOfHerName · 25/12/2017 21:52

Does your vet have an out of hours service you could phone tomorrow morning for advice?

ScreamingValentaMySantaExpress · 25/12/2017 21:56

Agree with the advice about getting him checked out. Does your son's girlfriend have a cat of her own that yours might have smelt on her? My late and temperamental girl cat used to start hitting me and growling if I stroked her after handling a strange cat.

feliway might help if he is having stressy moments

Usually, if a cat acts out of character like that, it’s because they are ill. Definitely need a vet appt ASAP.

Weedsnseeds1 · 25/12/2017 22:01

Sounds like something really scared him, I don't think he was being aggressive from what you said.
Did the girlfriend maybe accidentally trap him in a corner or something like that?

Veterinari · 25/12/2017 22:02

Has he urinated?

It sounds like classic ‘blocked cat’ i.e his urinary outflow is obstructed with crystals/sediment and he cannot pee. This means his bladder will be super-enlarged and very painful. It’s an absolute emergency.

If he’s wee’d that’s great but if not then you need to get him to an emergency vet ASAP. His bladder could rupture

My cat gets UTIs sometimes and I can tell when they're coming because he acts really weird and rushes round the house like he's had a fright. Is he straining on his litter tray, or doing a trying to pee anywhere he normally wouldn't?

CrazyCatMum · 25/12/2017 22:18

He was playing with my sons girlfriend for ages before this and he seemed ok, but this was scarey, I’ve never seen him be like this, he was even wiggling his bum which he does if he’s gonna pounce, even when I’ve got up in the night and tripped over him he hasnt batted an eye.

I’ll phone the vet tomorrow and see if they are open. He has used the litter box so hopefully that’s not it.

Normally when I’m in the kitchen he’s at my back, climbing on th work tops trying to see what food is getting made but I was ignored ☹️

I just feel helpless in that he can’t tell me what’s bothering him and I’m scared I’m going to get it wrong.

Thank you for your help x

Phew! If he’s definitely peed (poo not enough) then relax and have Wine

CrazyCatMum · 25/12/2017 22:57

Never a dull moment with this cat 😂
Hopefully it’s nothing, it was just the suddeness off it all happening, gave me a fright.
