Anyone else feel guilty about going on holiday?

DH and I have decided to go on holiday for our first anniversary, 11 nights long haul. First holiday since we got our two as kittens, they're about 10 months now.
I feel so sad at the thought of them thinking we've left them forever! My mum will stay over a few nights and will be able to pop in and feed them and let them out etc, she doesn't live far, but the thought of leaving them is breaking my heart Hmm

I need to get a grip don't I.

I'm away from my 2 at moment for 4 nights and missing them like crazy. They do have someone staying and looking after them, but of course I don't trust them Wink. They will be OK I know they will Hmm

Oh it's not just me then? First time I have left my girl since adopting her in the summer and I really miss her. I know our neighbour will be taking good care of her but it's just... Weird

Hamsterian · 25/12/2017 08:46

It's good to know it's just not me 😂
I have been known to return from holidays earlier than planned because of it.

Oh god I haven't travelled for Xmas so as not to leave the demanding little tyrant beloved pet.

Even the neighbours call her 'Her Highness' and we've only been here two weeks.

It is a bit easier knowing someone will call in rather than having to leave them at a cattery and some cats adjust to absence better than others.

But yeah it's not easy.

We always feel awful. The house is too quiet.

sillyswimmer · 25/12/2017 14:09

My cat is quite the actress about going to the cattery. She cries pitifully when we get there and immediately hides in the run. When I pick her up the moment she hears me she wails and I have to drag her out of her hiding hole. It makes me feel guilty the whole time we're away.

Last time I picked her I mentioned to the lady how awful I feel knowing she's stressed. It turns out, she loves it. She greets all the cats and humans near her run. Staff get licks and headbumps. She only cries and hides when I'm there apparently. I'm not going to feel so bad leaving her there in February!

I’ve left mine for four days I feel bad but I feel better knowing that they do actually sleep most of the day. My neighbour is going insnd I’ve paid a cat sitter. If it was a week or more they would be in the cattery. They do love it there but they don’t like the journey to and from,

Only one more day tomorrow then I’ll be back with them.

Toddlerteaplease · 26/12/2017 07:50

I put mine in a cattery last year for the first time. It was really posh and they were fine. I got a message from the owner saying Maia has sat on her knee for 20 min, having her chin tickled. I was EnvyHmmas she never sat on me that long!

OliviaStabler · 28/12/2017 10:01

I am going away for 12 nights early next year but a family member is cat sitting. I'll still talk to the cats via Skype Grin

ocelot41 · 29/12/2017 23:35

I am home! Oh the volley of headbunts! The hand licks! The tummy rolls! Puss is SO HAPPY....And I haven't even produced the ham yet...

Hookedoncatnip · 31/12/2017 23:56

I had to leave our kitten earlier this year less than two weeks after bringing her home due to travelling abroad to a funeral. She was only about 10 weeks old Sad. I felt awful but she did get extra fuss from the cattery lady because she was so little. I felt worse because she was a solo kitten. The lady kept telling me she needed a friend.

However, I didn’t go away again after that. I’m dreading leaving her this year even though, as yet, we have no plans. It will have to be a cattery as at least I would know where she is.

You are not alone OP. I worry she’ll feel as if we’ve abandoned her.

EachandEveryone · 06/01/2018 12:30

I must admit, i got a little friend for mine after rge first cattery stay. I couldnt bear for her to be on her own. It worked as well.

Shmithecat · 06/01/2018 12:32

I'm the same. We have 5 cats. When we go away our cleaner comes twice a day to sort them out. They like her very much but I feel guilty that they don't have company all day (I'm a sahm), but thinking about it they probably love the peace and quiet my toddler not being around affords..

kirinm · 06/01/2018 12:34

We never leave ours without a car sitter (usually my son who moves back in) but he's gone off travelling and I don't think we will ever go away again! I can't leave her on her own. She's too needy and would be devastated.

MaudesMum · 07/01/2018 15:16

An adult cat does sleep for about 19 hours a day, so logically they'll only miss you for 5 hours a day. And I'm not convinced they've got a sense of time, so they wouldn't necessarily realise its been a while since they've seen you. Having said all that, I also feel guilty when I'm away...

Toddlerteaplease · 08/01/2018 12:36

Ocelot, is that Georgia? How's she doing?

dailydance · 08/01/2018 12:43

My parents fly over to cat sit when I go away 😳 I could put them (the cats, not parents) into a cattery but I'd feel too bad. I need to find a local cat sitter.
