Litter tray just for winter?

Moved into our new house in the summer, installed a cat flap which our cats haven't had since they were a year old (now 7). Once they could come and go as they pleased they stopped using the litter tray so we took it away about 3 months ago.

Woke up this morning to wee by the front door and poo by the back door.

Is this just because it's so cold? Do those of you who don't have litter trays usually set them up in winter / cold spells?

One of my cats goes to the loo outside, mostly. However, when it's freezing outside or even just when the mood takes her, she'll use her litter tray. I always have litter trays available for mine, as it's up to them where they want to do their business.

Girl cat will use the litter tray as and when she feels like it, boy cat who is usually fastidious about going outside did a poo in the litter tray this morning, I think its just too chilly outside and the ground was frozen. I keep the litter tray out because they are kept inside overnight, but I wouldn't want to be without it anyway. Better in the tray than somewhere else!

Thanks ladies - we took it away when the twins started crawling since it wasn't being used anyway, but will set it back up.

our cat flap sticks badly in the winter, so OldCat struggles to get out.

I have a (rarely used) litter tray that is in a drawer that slides under the utility sink.

It would be ideal for cats that want to go indoors during the night but hidden (if they dont need it) during the day

We have one all year, there's not much of the U.K. Left that hasn't had a Croydon cat killer attack so he's in overnight.

Oh how scary - there's been nothing like that arohnd here, thank goodness, but i guess it's just a matter of time. No utility room here sadly - happy to leave one out in the kitchen for them, it's covered although still.not ideal, but there's really nowhere else for it to go!

Our cat did a wee in the tray for the first time in months at the weekend - she does NOT like the cold! Even though she’d not used it since we started letting her out back in August (new-ish rescue) we’ve always left it out just in case as she doesn’t have a catflap.
