Having recently lost our lovely 17 year old cat, we have a cat-shaped hole in our lives and will soon be re-homing a beautiful 2 year old cat.

She is a lovely girl, who is essentially black all over but with a small smattering of white hair on her front - not enough to be a white patch, but just a few white hairs within the black. She is currently called Smudge. I'm not keen on this name for a few reasons - firstly it was the name of my ILs' cat years ago (which was a pretty horrible cat which neither of us have fond memories of); secondly it is a bit ubiquitous; and thirdly - probably most importantly - everyone assumes it's a boy! (there's also the fact that I don't actually like the name).

I'm pretty sure that as soon as she settles in, she will be very unlikely to be called by her actual name - but she still needs one that we like, and which suits her (for the vets and cattery, if nothing else!)

So - any suggestions for a female name for a lovely black cat? (I've already suggested Agnes, which has been overruled).

(To pre-empt any questions - I don't have a photo, but will share when she comes home. Just conjure up in your minds a pretty black cat with lovely pale green eyes, and you're just about there).

I would say ‘Scout’ is androgynous, actually.

ElizaDontlittle · 07/12/2017 03:10

Scout could be either, if one was less literary.

I love Sadie from your colleagues' list - that's a great cat name. My girly is Hetty.
Ebony
Minerva
Addie
Gertie (Gertrude) - not many humans to clash with that!!

Mulch · 07/12/2017 21:08

My very own scout. Trying to convince other half we need a boy to call jem. It's only right

I love Connie from your colleagues’ list, but I’m biased as it was my late Mum’s name

CanYouHearThePeopleSing · 09/12/2017 12:34

We're on the way home with her now. Current frontrunner name wise is Cilla...

Mulch · 09/12/2017 17:49

Just realised is cilla a play on cilla black?

shhhfastasleep · 09/12/2017 17:59

Cilla is a great name. She looks beautiful.

OtterInDisgrace · 09/12/2017 18:12

Of course, Cilla Black - I didn’t realise til Mulch pointed that out. How fabulous!

CanYouHearThePeopleSing · 09/12/2017 18:26

Yes - Cilla Black! DH's idea but seemed like a good one. So many good suggestions on this thread, for which I thank you all... but Cilla seems to fit well. She has the loudest purr ever, and is very content to join us on the sofa. Just need her to use her litter tray and I'll be happy.

Cilla suits her beautiully shes gorgeous. Have you got the same litter from the cattery?

CanYouHearThePeopleSing · 09/12/2017 18:32

We've got wood litter, which is what they said she was used to. She's on her 4th home, poor thing, so they said she's not fussy. I know cats can go a long time, so I'm not worried. I'm sure she'll go once she's had a proper meal. She's more interested in socialising at the moment.
