Does anyone have any experience with having a Maine Coon? What are they like as pets? I'm thinking of getting one soon as they are just so beautiful! I've had cats all my life but just moggies

Mine is a rescue. She’s very chilled out and friendly. She loves a cuddle and a fuss and loves human company. We were told she doesn’t get on well with other cats and I think that’s partly why she was rehomed. She’s picky and particular about food and cat litter and costs a fortune in food. She requires a fair bit of grooming but sheds less than I expected.

A friend of mine has a pedigree that she got as a kitten from a very reputable breeder. She is also beautiful and friendly but incredibly high-maintenance. She’s pees and poos everywhere when stressed and gets stressed by visitors, any change in routine, being left home alone, neighbours’ DIY noises etc etc. She also has to have her rear end shaved because she gets in a horrible mess with poo otherwise.

I know someone else who has two that he got as kittens from a breeder. They seem to be ‘easy cats’; not picky about food, no litter tray problems, they keep each other amused but they aren’t cuddly like mine or my other friend’s one.

I think it’s difficult to predict the temperament of a cat based on breed alone. In my experience of Maine Coons they have quite different personalities. A lot of what I read suggested they aren’t lap cats but mine loves a lap. The picture I’ve attached shows her less than half an hour after we got her home from the shelter.
