vets started to spay.......

.....our boy cat! Apparently the notes were wrong, and they only noticed after they had started making an incision. Poor fucking puss. We can't pick him up until 5 and I am furious.....and just needed a rant.

Poor darling. This is why on humans you have to draw a big arrow at the operating site. Sounds like they need to review their failsafes.

Mine had a narrow escape too.

I took him for a check up when we first got him as a kitten. When the appointment was over, I booked him in at the desk to be neutered in a few weeks time.

It was only when I took him back for the neutering that the receptionist told me that he'd been put on their list as a female. It was only spotted because she'd been confused by me referring to the cat as "he" and not "she".

How did they miss his balls?. Our cat had two conkers you couldn't miss.

They clippered and cut....he has stitches!

He is twice the size of his sister, and very obviously male! The notes on the consent form said spay (which dh didn't notice) and she said it was confusing because his name is not male (unless your a Harry Potter fan!)

My mums boy cat is called Snowball , so quite girly and our vets managed to work out he was a boy . Poor cat , I’d be expecting to not be paying a bill for this .

Find out their complaints procedure.
And find out a new vet.

At least he wasn't in to have anything else removed. FFS.

TBH I wouldn't have picked up on the term spay on a form! I would have assumed it could be used for both procedures - I don't have any medical background. Though now you mention it it does seem to be spay/neuter depending on sex.

Also curious about the name!

I don't blame dh at all, I also wouldn't have noticed the spay/neuter thing, and frankly how they can miss some fairly obvious boy parts is a mystery to me!

Fortunately they are the vets that were part of the process when we rehomed them from the Blue Cross, so the neutering/spaying and vaccinations were free, and the rest of their care has been (and will be) under our lovely local vets.

They were actually the names they had in the rescue centre, and as my dad are huge Harry Potter fans, they stuck. I tried to persuade them to change it to Remus.....but Lupin has stuck.

They'll be home soon, yay!

Well they came home, Lupin with a 5 inch square bald patch and stitches and Ginny with a cone round her neck (they were unable to get one on Lupin). Ginny threw herself around so frantically because of the collar, that it has come off.

I don't remember any of my other cats having a collar when they had the op.

Dh said he had arranged to take them back next week to have the stitches out, but I am very reluctant to take them back.

Well after a disaster with the collars, vet recommended a babygro......can I say, categorically THIS DOES NOT WORK.

They do proper vests. Can you get one?
Mine pulled her stitches out and had to be stapled! Shock

I think the baby gro is supposed to go on back to front, with the buttons along the back and tail through the hole where all the buttons meet.

They are usually pretty good at not worrying stitches. Try them with collar off. Never had one in any of my females when spayed and no problems.
