Why is she doing this?

We've had our rescue cat Izzy for 5 weeks now. At first she would meow very loudly once we'd all gone to bed, as if to say "where's everyone gone?" That didn't last long. I bought her a kicker toy a couple of weeks ago which she plays with a little. What she really likes to do with it is bring it to us at night and she meows about it very loudly for quite a while. She had one litter as a stray but sadly they all died. Do you think she's doing some kind of maternal thing or is she just trying to teach us how to hunt?

She is bringing you a love token ( pressie) when /if you let her out she may well bring you her fresh kills !

Both of mine do it - one more than the other. They are my first cats so no sure if it's common behaviour, but they just want to play. We throw it for them, usually down the stairs, they fetch and bring it back. If we ignore them, they throw them down the stairs themselves

Throw the toys, not each other - just to make it clear.

One of my friends cats would line all her toys up outside his bedroom door every morning. She doesn’t do it anymore. I think it was her way of showing her ownership of him!

It sounds as if she’s bonded with you and wants you ‘up and doing’. (She doesn’t want to be alone.) She wants some co-operative playing.

Thanks for your replies. I had a Tom cat before who rarely carried anything so to see Izzy carrying her toys around is quite amusing. I am particularly pleased that some of you think these are presents and that she's bonded with us as I've found it hard to tell if she even likes us as she's not a very cuddly cat.

LinaBo - I've tried throwing it but she's not interested. Glad your cats aren't throwing themselves down the stairs

Namethecat I will be letting her out in a few weeks and, judging by her toy behaviour and her windowsill viewing habits, I think it's safe to say we'll see a fair few dead birds soon
