Cat possibly hit by a car

Hi, posting from work as I feel pretty helpless and would be grateful for any advice.

10 yo much loved cat went missing overnight, we were worried, reappeared next day at lunchtime but sitting in the middle of our fenced back garden.

She wouldn't come in so was lifted in, she drank loads but no food and not moving. I moved her last night to the sofa and she half heartedly got off the sofa and onto the carpet. I then moved her to her cat basket at bedtime.

When I came down this morning she hadn't moved, so was taken to the vet. I'm at work, I spoke to the vet who says her breathing is laboured and she's very pale, perhaps struck by a car. He is keeping her in today and will put her on a drip, do X-rays and blood tests and will get back to me

I know it's impossible to be sure, but does anyone know what the next steps may be, or what to expect? Thanks in advance.

I don't think anyone here can give you more information than your vet can.

It's an awful thing for you all to be going through and I'm hoping for a good outcome.

So sorry to hear this. You must be very worried. If she got through the night, it sounds positive. Hopefully, the vet will be able to update you ASAP. Don't be worried about calling for an update. When my cat was hit by a car, smack in the face, he lost half a canine and looked a bit battered, but we were lucky that he came through it very well. I was expecting worse.

Thank you both. I called for an update and she is comfortable. I am leaving work early and will go to the vet for half five as they will have the blood test results by then. I don't think they'd done the X-ray when I called. Hoping for the best but fearing the worst.

So, the vet no longer thinks she was in a road traffic accident, and the chest X-ray showed no damage.

She is severely anaemic. The vet said there are many types of anaemia, and the type she has makes him think she has internal bleeding, but it is not in her chest or in her abdomen.

Her liver aminos(?) are very elevated per her blood tests. I asked what this meant and he said he couldn't tell unless a liver biopsy was taken, which would involve an operation and opening her open. My instinct came out of my mouth and I said 'oh no no' and he said 'I wouldn't recommend it at this stage, no'.

I asked for a prognosis and he couldn't give one. I've antibiotics and other medicine to put on her food, and I will take her back on Monday.

Being on the drip has brought her temp down, and she did a wee in the car in the way home so her bladder's working thank goodness. She is moving about gingerly.

Thank you all for the kind words. If anyone can shed any light I would be most grateful. Despite having both our lovely cats for ten years, they've both been very well to date and this is the first time I've had to take to the vet for anything other than a check up or jabs.

My advice would be if she has had ten great years then do not put her through any harsh treatment. Animals don’t understand that what might make them feel dreadful might make them feel better in a while.

My son was ill and had such traumatic experience of treatment that was meant to cure him and he was old enough and intelligent enough to understand. I have pledged that if any of my pets are ill I will not let them suffer in any way whatsoever.

But that is just my life experience.

Hi Minmooch, that is my instinct as well, and she has had 10 very good years.

She is taking her medicine and eating and drinking ok, not moving much though, and I don't think she's passing urine, although as we have two cats and one litter tray it's impossible to be certain, as she may have gone overnight.

She seems ok in herself for now, so I'm just petting her and letting her rest and hopefully get better. We'll see what the vet says on Monday.
