Canine teeth too long?

My cat's canine teeth have recently started digging into his lower lip causing them to bleed a bit. They are very long so always stick out, but I've never noticed them cutting in before. I'm going to take him to get checked at the vets but wondered if anybody had experienced anything similar and what the treatment (if any) might be? I've heard you can file them down a little. He doesn't seem uncomfortable but am worried it might get infected or more sore if left. Thanks for any advice!
