How to ease the aproximation between dog and kitten?

Hi!

I have a very sweet and submissive dog and my DP's adopted a kitten 3 months ago. My dog is 3yo and medium-big size and he wants to be friends with the cat.

DP stays at my home for several days sometimes and will bring the kitten almost all of those times. The kitten has a litter tray here and all kitten-gadgets it might possibly need and he is familiar with my home.

We've read that it's easier if the cat has something to climb on in order to feel safe and so far this has proven to be true as he is always on the table or shelves or anything tall really observing my dog. My dog is trying to approach him but whenever he gets near the kitten gets slightly angry (normal cat reaction) and my dog runs away really scared and sad. The kitten sometimes approaches him too.

Do you have any tips os how to make it easier for them? We both loves dogs and cats, but have no experience on how to help them get along.

Thank you!

We just did it very gradually, rather like you are doing, and in the end, when we knew our kitten could climb to safety out of the dogs' (we have two) reach we left them to it. They were fine - a few spats but our kitten just gave the dogs a swipe over their noses if they got too tough and they retreated. They all play together in one happy bundle now.
