Cat pet insurance

We have just acquired 2 new kittens and would like to get insurance. Any recommendations for companies?

Pet Plan! Definitely not the cheapest but I think the best. Make sure you get the life time cover. Our vets always look relieved when I say I'm with Pet Plan. Petplan reimburse the vets direct so you don't have to pay upfront and I have never had a problem claiming. I think we pay £38 per month for my 2 cats (aged 5).

Petplan wanted over £30 for each of my 2 kittens so i decided against them. I chose Tesco instead on their premier plan

We use Tesco pet insurance. They pay direct to the vet if you want and for our two cats it's less than £10 per month for their premium could cover.

Definitely Petplan. They've paid out for my car when the vet said most other companies wouldn't

Wow Demented, that's a lot! Are they pedigrees? I wonder why you were quoted so much more than I pay? Mine have been insured since they were 5 months but they are "just" long haired moggies.

Beware of policies that are not cover for life. They will likely be cheaper per month but if you have an ongoing health condition they will put exclusions in place usually after 12 months and then you have the issue of having to pay out yourself for that problem. No-one else will then give you cover that will cover that problem either. It is worth paying a bit more for a decent policy and make sure you read the terms and conditions and understand them.

Please also be aware just because an insurer will pay a vet directly it does not mean that the vet will work that way.

No they are moggies too and were 8 weeks when I got the quotes. The tesco premier one does offer lifetime cover

Petplan definitely. They are brilliant. My friend insured hers with Sainsbury I think (could have been Tesco) and after a year they stopped paying out. Petplan will insure conditions for life. They've forked out thousands for my old boy over the last decade or so.

Has anyone used Sainsbury's for insurance? Currently shopping around myself

I did a petplan quote just now and to get the same cover as I have with Tesco would cost £20.62 a month each. I pay just over that amount for 2 cats for £7500 cover each year.

Tesco also offers life cover depending which policy you go for

I pay Petplan £22 a month for a 16 year old cat that has a lifelong condition and since the age of 3 has had operations, medication and God knows what. I can't remember what I paid originally but due to his treatment it has obviously increased over the years.

Both his parents were pedigrees but of different breeds so he's classed as a moggy.

demented that's the cover I have. I'm surprised at the cost for a kitten compared to mine, but postcode can be an issue.

DM used Sainsbury's for her dog. They were really goo about paying out but the insurance rocketed each year. She end up cancelling it when it got to £100 a month

Tesco. Paid two huge claims for my two without quibble.

I'd like to change my pet insurance (from direct line), but I'm worried a new insurer may not cover existing conditions. I had to claim for my cat a couple of months go when he got a bladder blockage. This is something he may be prone to throughout his life, and his episode would have cost over £1100.
I have lifetime cover, but it only covers up to £8000 per condition, and doesn't renew each year. So, if his FLUTR condition recurs multiple times, I may not be covered.
And I have a dog breed which is prone to eye and skin issues.
Currently paying £49 a month

I've got the top level cover from Tesco. I don't think it does cover dental stuff, unless it's as result of another problem.

From Tesco policy booklet:

We pay for the treatment your pet needs from a vet practice. This includes treatment for its teeth or gums as long
as the teeth and gums are checked each year by a vet and any treatment the vet tells you is required is carried out.
Once any required work has been carried out, should your pet then suffer from tooth decay or gum disease before
the next yearly check up, we will pay.
If no yearly check has been carried out, or if the work required is not carried out we only pay for treatment to teeth
or gums if they are damaged in an accident or if an underlying illness has caused tooth decay or gum disease or if
the teeth need to be removed to treat an illness. We also pay to remove first teeth that haven’t fallen out naturally,
as long as your pet was included on this policy before it was 16 weeks old.
Treatment means examinations, consultations, tests, x-rays, surgery, prescription medication or care. Treatment
can be given in the United Kingdom, Channel Isles or the Isle of Man or if you are travelling, EU countries covered
under the Government Pet Travel Scheme.
