My 17 yo cat is getting frail, he has some arthritis and he isn't so mobile anymore.
I took him to the vet because he was constantly hungry and I had wormed him and fed him on demand with no effect.
The vet tested for Thyroid plus as usual the liver and kidney function. They listened to his heart murmur which we already knew about and I told them I didn't want it investigated by ultrasound . The result was positive for thyroid and I started him on specific food. I said that I didn't want to start him on a long course of treatment.
Cat put on weight, appetite better. Still not very mobile. Recently took him back to get his Thyroid test again. Vet starts talking about heart murmur and now in addition to test his liver and kidney function again.
I asked what would be the outcome of any finding of these tests as I he is old and if his organs are failing he is coming to the end of his life, and I want him to be comfortable . In the end I agreed as she said a misfunctioning thyroid could mask problems with kidneys.
So when I rang to discuss the results vet was busy so I was told she would call me back. Later on the receptionist called me back on her behalf, some results of liver and kidney are slightly raised, vet would like to do more tests, can I bring in a urine sample ?
Am I being paranoid in thinking the vet is avoiding me? And that they are trying to test for everything they can unnecessarily ? Am I being cruel to my cat? I want him to be pain free but I don't know what to do.
Should I call back and insist I speak to the vet, AIBU to want to know what they want to test for and what the prognosis and possible treatments are?
