Cat allergy advice

We don't currently own pets but my primary aged children desperately would like cats of our own. They have fed the cats of friends whilst they're on holiday and we've discussed what's involved in caring for a pet and I'm confident they're committed. I love cats too but I know that they bring me out in an allergy effecting my eyes and nose. My question is, would I develop a tolerance to whatever causes the allergy from the cats if we were sharing a home? I don't suppose it's healthy to take anti-histamines forever but I think the opportunity to nurture a pet would be good for them. Any thoughts?

I am allergic to pet hair but have 4 dogs and 2 cats!!
Gradually became immune to them though do have to wash hands after stroking our rottweiler (oily coat not hairy!) to avoid red spots and itchy eyes!! She is nearly 8 and have managed so far. . Anti histamine tablets in the short term. Though know someone who had a 3 month course of prescription ones for his cats at first. Good luck!!

There's a product range called Petalcleanse which helps to clean animals fur of their saliva (which contains proteins which people are more likely to be allergic to). It has helped in our house.

DD2 was allergic to cats from a young age (7ish) but when she had cats of her own in her 20s she became desensitised.

She doesn't have them any more, & reacts again to mine when she comes to my house, but antihistamines deal with her symptoms.

So I'd say go for it Smile
