How far can cats travel? Lost cat

I am so upset one of my young cats (just coming up for 1) has vanished. There is no sign of him anywhere and I haven't seen him since Sunday (although DS said he saw him on Monday morning outside).

We are surrounded by farmland and the nearest neighbours are a field away. There is quite a fast country road a field away but we are set back quite some distance down a farm track. He has never ventured up it.

I just feel awful as we got him as a rescue kitten and his brother is really pining for him, walking around calling him with me. I have scoured the fields, roadsides, informed neighbours and vet. Shone a torch at night. Nothing.

He is quite an adventurous outdoor cat (but very friendly). One day he came in covered in mud and soggy. I am just wondering how far he could roam? He likes hunting and for 2 mornings there was a mouse/rat deposited on the front door step, so wondered if that was him. We have plenty of outbuildings so there is shelter, but he isn't in any of them.

I feel like I have let the rescue centre down as promised to look after him.

How long had he lived with you?

They can wander far but don't lose hope they are generally good at finding their way back. Can you put posters up and register on all the lost pet websites, FB pages, all vets and local animal charities websites, local radio can have calls out for lost pets.

Keep calling him at different times of day, early morning and late eve when it's quieter is best. At this time of year he's likely putting his hunting skills to good use, I sincerely hope he's back safely soon as I know how awful it is not knowing where they are and if they need help.

Also keep pestering neighbouring houses to check their sheds and outbuildings in case he's locked in.

Don't give up hope, mine disappeared for over a month once. Hope he's back safely sooner than later.

Thank you for all the suggestions and kind words- will keep trying. We got him and his brother last December- so just over 8 months ago. I am about to go and stick a note on the post box for our post man (box at the end of the track).

It is just awful not knowing what has happened to him.

goldenlilliesdaffodillies · 24/08/2017 21:25

Happy news- my cat has come back! I was just creating a poster saying 'Lost Cat' after reading some old Mumsnet threads on previous lots cats being found- just I added his photo to the post I heard the cat flap rattling and the dog barking and there was my cat outside the door! I have no idea where he has been- he is hungry and tired but following me everywhere! Our other cat has been grooming him like mad!

Yesterday I bumped into a new neighbour who had just moved in and asked her if she had seen him. I also put out his bedding outside the front door last night- so wondered if either of these helped. Just so relieved. :)

Thanks to those of you who offered advice.

Yayyy! Excellent news, I'm so pleased he's home

Hooray! I remember the horror of a cat I was looking after going missing for a whole month last Xmas - he vanished between the owner going away & my first visit.

Sooooooo glad he's home. It's such a worry. My ginger Tom disappeared for 2 weeks once when he was young despite being neutered but luckily lost the impulse as he got older.

Wonderful news! Grin

Great, was coming on to say to put bedding etc outside and scrolled down first :)
