How often do you completely change cat litter?

I'm a little concerned my five month old kitten urinates excessively. I have to completely change the litter every three days. It's saturated after that time.

It's not that I'm putting too little in as it's full.

She is odd in that she likes water. Always tries to get in the loo , sink when washing up , plays with the dog water bowl , in our drinks - you name it if there's water she's either drinking or playing with it.

She is very active and healthy but just urinates a lot. I have a feeling she's just drinking loads but I'm getting it checked out.

Would you say that amount is normal or not.

Depends on how good your littler is. My two girls share a tray and I only do a full change once a month on pay day.

I use a clumping litter so pee and poo can be removed which means fewer big changes.

ElizaDontlittle · 01/07/2017 19:03

My kitten is also getting thru litter like you wouldn't believe. My big girl like Toddler's - will last 3-4 weeks. This kitten is eating and weeing me out of house and home!

i use wood pellet litter, and on a daily basis shake the tray to remove the poos, and then when theres more sawdust than pellets complete change which is probably every 3/ 4 days as the pellets seem to last longer than the clay based ones, and the wood absorbs the smell better too

dementedpixie · 01/07/2017 20:23

I use corn litter and it clumps so pee/poo is removed. Can last a couple of weeks with a few top ups

CatchingBabies · 02/07/2017 21:36

I use a silica litter, tried it as it was on special offer and I'm a convert now. Can leave it a whole month before changing fully and even then there is no smell at all so it could probably do longer. Just scoop the poo once or twice a day and that's it!

Chickydoo · 02/07/2017 23:00

I change completely every day

dementedpixie · 03/07/2017 07:05

That sounds like a massive waste of litter

Chickydoo · 03/07/2017 08:02

5 cats 2 trays
Sometimes I do it twice a day

Toddlerteaplease · 03/07/2017 12:13

Chicky, invest in better quality litter and you won't have to do it daily!

dementedpixie · 03/07/2017 12:34

What litter do you use toddler?

RodeoDriveBaby · 03/07/2017 12:37

We have the clumping stuff - we just scoop out the poo and clumps of wee twice daily and top up with a bit of litter once it's running thin (about once a week)

We only do a full empty once a month.

RodeoDriveBaby · 03/07/2017 12:38

I change completely every day

OMG why would you do that!!!!!!! So bad for the environment.

Toddlerteaplease · 03/07/2017 14:03

Pixie. I use intersand extreme classic. It's brilliant. I scoop once daily in the morning and full change once a month. It never smells. That's with two indoor cats both using it.

Toddlerteaplease · 03/07/2017 14:04

Occasionally top up. But if I put enough in it doesn't always need it.

CatchingBabies · 03/07/2017 17:19

Toddler - The silica litter lasts a month as well with once a day scooping and is cheaper than the one your getting now. Might be worth a try.
