Dog hates the cat's bell

The cat kills about 5 birds a week. Last week he had a pigeon, a blue tit, a robin, and 2 blackbirds. He also ravaged an entire nest of goldfinches in the spring.

We got him a bell for his collar but the dog absolutely hates it. Whenever the cat moves the dog growls and destroys whatever he's got in his mouth. Since we got the bell, the dog's behaviour has been a nightmare.

Is there any way of stopping the cat kill birds without having a bell? We tried keeping him in at dusk and dawn but he'd purposefully pee on the furniture

you could take his collar off when hes in the house and put it back on when he goes out, and to be quite honest bells on collars dont always work, the resident cat at the rescue centre where i work has one on his collar that is the cat equivalent of a cows bell and he still brings back lovely wildlife pressies for his mom

The cats a bit manic so we're never quite sure where he is, so I don't think taking it on and off would help. I've had killer cats before, but never one that is so generally badly behaved.

It makes me think that a bell would be useless too then

We lock ours in the utility room overnight, it's the only time he uses a tray.

We tried keeping him in over night but he just does it during the day. Last week, half of his kills were during the day.

We considered making him an indoor cat but he'd happily throw himself out a window if we tried to keep him in full time.
