Accidentally hurt my cat

My beautiful 18 year old sidekick ended up at the vets this morning. She had a big clump of matted fur on her back which I hacked off with scissors! Done it many times before. She didn't flinch and there didn't appear to be a problem initially. About half hour later my son noticed lots of blood and I
ran upstairs to find a bloody huge skin laceration about 2 inches across! Took her to the vets and she's ended up with 11 staples!!! To say I feel guilty is an understatement! She's had cuddles, treats and best tuna for lunch. Vet says she's seen it before and not to worry too much. I often do it (DID it.......won't again !!!!) as she often gets clumps of matted fur that doesn't brush out. I know the vet was trying to make me feel better but I've had my old girl since she was 8 weeks old. She's the most placid gentle cat ever. I feel terrible 😞😞😞

Oh no! Can't believe your cat didn't flinch or at least miaow!

Shoegal0305 · 21/06/2017 15:49

She doesn't like having clumps cut out of her fur full stop so tried to move but I certainly wouldn't say she 'flinched' I keep reliving it and thinking how I hurt her. And immediately after she came up for cuddles and there was no blood! Vet seems to think when I pinched her skin to cut the fur I've created a 'seal' which is why it didn't bleed straight way. 😞😞

Blimey, I thought you'd trod on her tail or something.

Is she sulking with you?.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 21/06/2017 16:12

Ouch! At least she's all stapled up now, an you won't do it again . If she's that amenable can't you groom her every day with a brush or doesn't she let you?

Poor you BrewFlowers

Oh no! Poor cat but poor you too!

dingit · 21/06/2017 16:15

I did that to my boy years ago. She will forgive you Flowers

Fluffycloudland77 · 21/06/2017 16:15

It was an accident. It's not like you did it on purpose.

She doesn't seem to associate it with you at least.

Shoegal0305 · 21/06/2017 16:22

I do brush her all the time she loves it. But due to her age she has a habit of pooing in the litter then sitting in it! So I also have to regularly wash her back end. She often has poo-ey litter-ey clumps stuck to her bum bless her. She's so trusting I feel I've abused her trust! She's fast asleep now and doesn't seem any worse for it it's me that's now suffering 😞

Aww! She's lovely!I miss my rather scraggy, old white cat. She'll forgive you!

Shoegal0305 · 21/06/2017 19:53

She is spoilt rotten (except when her mum is hacking into her with scissors!! 😞)........ I had another cat who was 17 I lost him in February so she really missed him. She is like my little shadow she's loyal like a dog not aloof like cats normally are. She seems ok in herself thankfully. It's just the guilt now lol. Plenty of cuddles and treats. Back to the vet on Friday for more antibiotics then 14 days till staples out xx

I once cut a tiny whole in Maia's neck. She never flinched. It didn't bleed. I panicked and rushed her straight to the vet in floods of tears. They said she needed stitches under GA. she came back with a huge wound. Found out later that she didn't need stitches at all and it would have healed fine. I was absolutely devastated but she really didn't care!

Shoegal0305 · 21/06/2017 20:48

Aw toddler poor Maia Sad

My old girl DEFINITELY needed either stitches or staples the wound I inflicted on her wouldn't have healed otherwise. 😞😞😞

Awww, poor kitty!

I hope you both feel better soon Flowers

I did exactly this to my old boy last year. His only protest was to hold my hand in his teeth and look at me imploringly. He healed fine despite his age - 17 at the time and my vets told me this happens all the time. I was so upset I'd don't it to him. His was glued and they were worried it might not work but it worked perfectly.

Feel better soon, both of you.

Shoegal0305 · 21/06/2017 22:04

Thanks isadorable it makes me feel better I'm not the only one to have done it xx

Glad if my experience helps. She looks a very beautiful and rather regal one, they're such a part of the fabric of your life despite all the oldie stuff you have to deal with when you've had 'em so long aren't they? Hope she heals well.

Weedsnseeds1 · 22/06/2017 14:06

My old girl used to get very matted as she got older. I found that she would tolerate clippers ( used the sort designed for men's hair), which were fairly quiet in operation and no risk of accidental cutting if they start wriggling. Might be worth borrowing some to see if your cat will allow it. The problem is, the mats themselves can cause skin to tear if left, so you need to deal with them somehow.
