Keep him in for a whole week?

Boy cat got himself in a pickle on Sunday evening, came home limping and with fox poo smeared over him Cleaned him up and took him to the vets yesterday, she found an abscess on his front leg and a cut near one of his back claws, most likely caused by fighting. She cleaned both wounds and treated with painkillers and antibiotics.
My question is, she said he needs to stay in for a week, do you really think this is necessary? Surely his wounds will be healed in a few days? It is a bit of a nightmare as we have girl cat who still wants to go out, also boy cat looks very sad as he loves going outside.
Any advice? Its going to be a loooong week.

Poor old thing. I suppose we should listen to our vets, but it's painful to see Dcats desperate to go out and have another fight with whoever's trying to take over rheir territory! If he's fighting a lot, his wound will probably be hit again and you'll be back to square one. Keep him in for as long as you can stand. Good luck.

Yes, I would keep him in. The last thing you want is for him to get his injury infected again.

Thanks for the replies. He is getting increasingly desperate to go out and is currently sitting staring at me. Its as if he is trying to get me to read his mind 'Let me out hooman, need to go out!'
He's actually a very soft gentle cat, at least in the house, so I was surprised that the vet said it was from fighting.
Ah well, best carry on and try and ignore I guess...only 5 more days

I get it's frustrating - we had to keep one of our old cats from running around much once. She was only two and her brother loved chasing her around the flat - the vet refused to staple her wound, and it opened three times before the OOH vet (who was lovely and never charged me anything) stapled it shut - after which she was absolutely fine and it healed perfectly

It was a nightmare - eventually she had to wear the cone of shame which stopped her charging around/picking at her scars, but she couldn't eat with it on, so someone had to supervise her at mealtimes. Poor thing felt so sorry for herself!

Thank you Caffeine I do have rather a soft spot for him. Your experience sounds awful, poor cat and poor you! Am hoping to avoid the cone of shame, it looks like it should heal up quickly, its not too big. Typical that's its so hot, I wouldn't choose to keep my doors shut right now!

Thankfully she recovered fine as soon as her wound had been stapled --God knows why they didn't just staple it in the first place - it wasn't fun dragging her to the vets three times in as many days!

If you don't want to keep the doors closed, you can get mesh to put over doors/windows to stop cats escaping :)
