Fatty had surgery on her jaw 4 weeks ago. She has a checkup with the surgeon tomorrow. Just rang to check if it was included in the cost of the original treatment. (Currently at £5000) and it's not included. It's £184!! I thought follow ups were included in the original cost of the treatment. Is this taking the piss?

I think it depends on the practice to be honest. When Harry fractured his jaw last year we were charged for each of the check up appointments. When I mentioned it to my cat sitter she said her practice wouldn't do that, it's included in the price of the surgery. I was also told that some practices (mine included) charge if it's an insurance claim as it's a guaranteed payment. That's all well and good, but we have to pay 20% of any claims because of Harry's age!

My friends dog had leg surgery and prior to the op, I distinctly remember the surgeon saying follow up appointments were included in the overall price. When I took friend & his dog for first checkup after op, the vets asked for payment & I promptly reminded them of what the vet had said about it being included in the overall price. They let it go but because my friend's very soft, he insisted on paying for the 2 other check ups.

I think follow up appointments should be included.

My practice charges. Not much, but there is definitely a charge.

Mine doesn't add any further charges. I think those that do should be ashamed of themselves.

My usual vet doesn't charge. But this is a referral centre. Slightly suprised when the letter from the insurance came through this morning saying they'd settled the claim for £3,500. I was a bit Hmm as I'm sure the estimate pre op was only about 2000. I went through it with one of the nurses and worked out how much money I had left on the policy.

It definitely depends on the vet. Our old vet charged for follow-ups (only about £25 though) but our current practise doesn't charge for any check-ups.

£185 and we were in their for less than 10 minutes!
