Thinking about getting a pedigree rescue....

DH and I are thinking of getting a Dcat. We have both had family cats growing up but this would be our first cat as grown ups. We have two small DC (under 3), but we are confident that they will be respectful of the cat etc.
I love long haired cats and would love a Maine Coon or Forest Cat (my mum has a Maine Coon). DH is leaning towards a moggy. We definitely want a rescue cat and could potentially get more than one, if they would be happier in a pair. Not looking for a kitten but I think an older cat might struggle with the DC, if not used to them.
Does anyone have any advice for us? Know any good pedigree rescue centres etc? Or do you think the DC are too young and we should just wait?

Sorry, I realise you're not wanting to buy a pedigree, just that I was looking for particular breeds because I find them so beautiful. Anyway, here's my soppy NFC type thing.

I have two pedigree rescue cats. They're sisters so we got them at the same time obviously, one has always been a little anxious and weird, the other is super chill. It's just their personality.

They are beautiful though.

Oops didn't mean to upload a picture of her mid-wash, she wouldn't like that.

Gosh it makes you wonder why people give them up doesnt it looking at those two the owner says they are extremely pampered i wonder what happened it would be heartbreaking.

Fruit cocktail. Same with mine. It's taken 21 months but one of mine sat on my knee without 'her'towel this morning.

Toddlerteaplease · 19/05/2017 20:30

NFC?

NemosKnickers · 19/05/2017 21:10

Sorry, Norwegian Forest Cat.

I have two very fluffy rescue boys. I have always had rescue cats and they have all been fab. Like you, I love long haired cats. In my experience there are usually just as many long haired cats as short haired at the rescue centres. I would quite like another one but my DH thinks our current two horrors are enough!

Those faces are butter wouldn't melt. However, I think cats are good at doing those faces when they are after something or have done something they shouldn't...

Toddlerteaplease · 19/05/2017 22:42

Sooo angelic!

Weedsnseeds1 · 19/05/2017 23:10

I have a faux Siberian. I chose him as the rescue said he was nervous and would be hard to home, especially as he is black. He hid for two months then decided he was a dog. He's the most sociable and gregarious cat I have ever known.

Icequeen01 I think I'm in love with your two! I've got such a soft spot for marmalade cats.

I always always always wanted main coons for about 10 years, but when it came to actually being in a position to get a cat I just didn't think it would be fair to get a main coon in this size house garden.

lottieandmia · 20/05/2017 11:29

I have ragdolls. I have tried to adopt rescue ragdolls but the charity won't rehome to me because I already have cats and I have children.

BrexitSucks · 20/05/2017 15:23

I met a lady with 9 rescue ragdolls, but she didn't have kids.
My mind just boggles @ all the litter tray clearing

Sadik · 20/05/2017 16:03

Just to add to the voices saying don't be put off rescues! In my experience they know their cats very well, and will find you the perfect match.

I used to live in a housing co-op with 12 adults, many young children and visitors coming and going - the rescue came out to see us and matched us up to a lap-magnet massive tom who loved everyone (and sorted out the rats on the compost heap).

Here's my current rescue cat - she doesn't like being held, but is ridiculously friendly otherwise (and great with other cats, which is what we'd asked for as we were looking for a friend for our lonely older cat after our dog passed away).

Oh ragdolls are so lovely that you just forget about the litter tray clearing!

Icequeen01 · 20/05/2017 22:38

Thank you Kokusai. I also love ginger cats and when I saw these two on the website of our local cat rescue it was love at first sight! People often ask if the are Maine Cokns but mum was a pedigree Birman and dad the local ginger Tom! Here's another photo a few days after we got them.
