Poorly cat.

Dbigcat came from the CPL 2.5 years ago. Already had one thyroid removed. Was 9/10. After a few months became poorly and diagnosed diabetic.

Took ages to stabilise but has been improving steadily with insulin requirements slowing decreasing.

But now - 3 months ago he had a snotty cold. Antibiotics cleared it, it came back. Two weeks of antibiotics it. It came back. (I had a baby in the meantime, and a relationship breakdown,)

He's lost weight, eating well. Cold wasn't too bad, but didn't seem right. Took him.back to vets, insulin reduced again, blood tests done, all normal.

So he's got an appointment on Thursday a.m. For another glucose curve for the diabetes and a scan/xray of chest and head, to see if there's anything causing the snottiness and snory breathing.

Hes been bright and playful but seems worse today. The vet who sees him is fabulous but not there tomorrow. The other vet, I'm really not keen on. Of course I'll take him tomorrow to the other vet if need be.

I'm scared it's not going to be good news. I feel guilty as he must have thought he had a lovely retirement home then I had two babies in quick succession and feel I don't give him enough time. Just sad really.

That sounds very stressful for you all. I wonder if he has an infection?

Thank you, he's been OK today so going in as planned first thing tomorrow. Just had a little cry. Last night I went and sat with him for an hour after the children were asleep. Tonight he came and sat on my lap for 20 minutes,not something he really does. He's lost a lot of weight.

An infection would be the best outcome I think. Thanks for your reply.

Aahhh, sorry to hear you're so upset. I thought my 20 year old had come to his end last week and I was very upset, but version says he's in great form for his age.

Good luck for tomorrow. You're a great mum to all of your babies.

Ah thank you both. It was two years yesterday since I lost my old horse so feeling a bit emotional.

Thank you. Picking him.up later. Glucose curve was spot on. Clear chest x ray. Lots of discharge from one nostril, vet has taken a swab to be sent away,, hopefully it will show up a bacterial infection that can be treated accordingly.

Vet decided again head x ray as dcat would need sedation which can play havoc with his diabetes.

Lost another 100g in less than a week.

Will be sent home with some meds to tide him.over til the swab comes back.

If he doesn't gain weight after treatment will be referred to a specialist. Thank God for petplan!!

Vet just called, not eating this morning, hasn't we'd overnight. Cant have insulin without food. They're keeping him in.

Nottalotta I wish you and your cat all the very best - I hope he is ok.Was your cat previously given a special diabetic cat food? My 7 yr old darling cat was and it made him very ill. So, only as a suggestion, if your cat IS on a vet's special diabetic food PLEASE google it to make sure there are no health probs associated with it. I didn't and trusted the vet. I wished I hadn't - I ended up changing to another practice when I found out there were probs which were never even vaguely mentioned. x

Thanks Gerty. There seems to be a deep seated infection. Still waiting for the swab to come back but he's on some antibiotics, appetite stimulant, and a supplement, and is in much better form. I'm a bit annoyed as I felt somewhat fobbed off the last two times (by the different vet).

He is on diabetic cat food, has been for a couple years. Royal canin dry food. I don't get it from.the vets and they didn't recommend it (I've a friend who is a vet, she suggested it)

Fab that your friend recommended it and that he has been on it a couple of years!!! My 7 yr old cat was on a non-famous diabetic food direct from the vet; in 2 wks he was paralyzed and pts. He looked ill from day 2 and I went back and back and back to the vet but she insisted it wasn't the new food. I am of the opinion it was. He begged me for normal food but I stuck to my (the vet's) guns and at the time he was pts I could have killed myself with the fact I blamed myself for following the vet's instructions. I didn't think to google it; when I did, lots of people said their cat perished in a couple of months - it was a Skandinavian firm. Obvsly I immediately switched vets. Bless, bless, bless your cat xx PS My current cat is ill at 19 with an abscess - I know he will have to be pts soon as its inoperable due to his age. I cry every night in bed - the vet said 4 wks or so but I know him and think its the next few days as he has that expression on his face........

Bless you it's so so hard. Theresnothing worse. We should always trust our instincts with our pets I think. But it's not always that easy when you have a professional giving you advice is it?

So very true Nottalotta. One of my pals came over tonight to say goodbye to him and cried when she saw him, just lying on the carpet - then he saw her and suddenly perked up and said hello with a big l o n g stretch. It was almost as though he was saying don't cry, I have some life in me yet >^^< ahhhhhhhhhhh!

I am beyond words, my darling cat had a stroke this morning and was put to sleep at 10.40. My heart is broken into a million pieces. I feel life's not always worth living and yes I have lost human family too in the past. Sir P was a present bought for me when my Mum died and I was bereft. I walk in and there is no longer a black and white boy to greet me with such boundless love and devotion. The world has lost a gentlemanly and scholarly cat. RIP dearest Sir P. xxxxxxxxx

Ah so sorry to hear that gert I'm sure he had a lovely and long life with you. It sounds a though his time had come.

Coming home to a pet-less house is awful. I found my old cat dead in the garden 3 years ago, lasted two weeks before going to the CPL and adopting Dbigcat.

Who seems porkies but tbh looks awful. I'm sure he's still losing weight. Not sure the infection he's got accounts for it.
