Constipated cat again.

Posted a while ago about my friend's new cat who has constipation. He ended up having to have a manual evacuation at the vets. He was ok for a while on liquid paraffin as suggested on here. But he's now very bunged up again and probably needs another manual evacuation. Unfortunately his insurance won't cover it as it was a pre existing problem. (Though the CPL didn't tell her about it). My friend has now got to the end of her tether and is wanting to return the cat. (His brother will probably have to go too as they are very close) the kids are very upset. Anyone got any suggestions. Lactulose was t successful. I've told her to see if the vet has any other ideas.

Who will she be returning the cats to? I cannot believe that she'd give away her cats. If she does, then she should never have another pet. Animals have the same medical complaints as us humans & that's all part of us taking care of them.

It was probably me who suggested liquid paraffin. One of my cats has had megacolon for a few years and has had lots of enemas, vet stays on drips and it took a long time before liquid paraffin was recommended to me. It does work. You have to give a whole capful, straight. Not with food but neat. Luckily, mine like's the taste of it and licks it directly from the cap. If your friend's cat won't do that, she needs to pour it in his mouth or use a pippet
Mine has no trouble with his bowels now, in fact, he goes a couple times a day, which is better than the alternative.

Any cat cannot be left with this condition. It's imperative that he's taken to a vet ASAP. He'll be in a lot of pain & it can be very harmful.

To the vet who gave lactulose but he won't take it. The manual evacuations are not covered by the insurance and she can't afford £400 every fe months. I think saying she should never have another pet again is a bit harsh. It's not what I would do but she really feels she can't cope with it any more. The CPL must have known of the problem but didn't tell her.

It's not harsh. This is the reality of having a pet. May be CPL did know about it. She should talk to them and ask for financial assistance from them. Why is her vet charging £400 for treatment? The most I've ever paid is £100 & that included an overnight stay on a drip.

I don't know why it's £400ut does seem excessive. I don't agree with sending them back but if she's not prepared to persevere the. There's not much I can suggest.

What food does the cat eat? Is the constipation diet related? Does the cat drink much?

My elderly cat is often constipated. As above recommendations, I resort to lactulose (given via a syringe). I'm also giving mine 'cat a lax' which the vet recommended. I buy it cheaper online. It's a fish paste with oil in it mine licks it off my finger. Since I have been giving him that every other day he hasn't had any issues. Mine has had numerous enemas but they were about £80ish. £400 seems excessive.

Can I ask where you get cat a lax online. My cat will not take lactulose and i am currently doing weekly mini enemas for my cat( the vet showed me how) which works but obviously not ideal.

Hi, we get it from Amazon (or wherever I can get it cheapest!) but just had a google www.vetuk.co.uk/dog-supplements-cat-supplements-constipation-treatments-c-5_144/katalax-20g-tube-cat-laxative-paste-p-27- think it's a bit cheaper via Amazon. It's actually Kat a lax, sorry for confusion! My old boy loves it, he was getting bunged up from over grooming (he's long haired). Am trying to avoid further enemas as he gets so stressed. So far, this seems to be helping.
