injured uninsured cat

We have a 4 year old cat that us uninsured.

This car has hurt it's foot. After taking her to the vets, it's a suspected fracture or dislocation. Can't be sure without a few xrays.

Cost to xrays and possible cast/splint if broken will be £650

We don't have that much money

We are not in receipt of benefits.

Currently cat is caged (large dog cage) to limit movement and has had antibiotics and is on painkillers which will run out in about 4 days.

What would you do next?

My thoughts are currently, take back to vets after painkillers and see what the situation is. See if cat will be in pain if nothing done Or PTS if cat will be in pain?

Or something else?

(I do not need a lecture on how I should have insured the cat. It's too late for that.)

Does your vet offer a payment plan? If not could you find another vet that would?

Could you approach the Blue Cross? I think they help owners who can't afford vet bills.

Call cats protection league and see if they have vets that will do discounted rate?

Once the painkillers and antobiotics finish I would take the cat back to the vet and see what they say. If the cat does need treatment I would be running up my credit card to do what he needed, or begging and borrowing the money from somewhere.

I feel quite sad that somebody would have their cat pts for a sore paw because they couldn't be arsed to pay for it....

I wish we had properly expensive animal licences. And enforced insurance. Might make folk actually think before taking on a sentient being that may need care.

Your Dcat can't be left with a fracture or dislocation and any vet wouldn't allow that. You can't leave it untreated. I would find the money to pay for medical care. Will your vet allow stage payments or can you ask someone for a loan? If you can't resolve it, then ask a rescue if they can take him/her. Try the RSPCA www.rspca.org.uk/home, and ask if they'll carryout treatment or rehome him/her. Blue Cross www.bluecross.org.uk or PDSA www.pdsa.org.uk might be able to help.

Do you have a local rescue centre that can help or advise?

If you do manage to raise funds and keep Dcat, you'll have to consider any future costly treatment he/she will need and if you'll be able to afford it.

You can't have your cat PTS because you didn't bother to have them insured, that's awful.

Check if any vets near you have a payment plan, if not then sell some things online or take out a loan.

I couldn't have my cat put to sleep for an injured foot. If it were me I would approach a charity like the blue cross and see if they could help and failing that I'd agree a payment plan with the vet.

You sell whatever you can.
You beg or borrow money.
You get a credit card.
You appeal to every cat charity you can think of.
You don't put to sleep over a simple fracture FFS.
Oh and any other animals? Insure or rehome.

You will have to get a loan or a credit card. You have been incredibly irresponsible to have a pet without the means to pay for emergency vet treatment, so go and scrabble the money to fix him.

Oh and yes, if you won't find the money then put it to sleep. I say that as a vet. Rescues are full and no one will rehome him anyway. Best to put him out of his pain quickly and with dignity.

If you are prepared to come into East London we could do that for a fraction of the price - probably less than £100. Do pm me if you want to go down that route

Actually I'm only guessing about the cost, but it certainly would be less than £200. We would need proof of low income though.

If you can't afford insurance, or to self insure (i.e. have enough income to pay for vet bills!) then you can't afford a pet :-(

If some of the sentiments expressed on here related to benefits, welfare and unplanned pg on other parts of this board there's be a riot.

OP has asked for help and advice. Her cat has had four good years which it might otherwise not have had.

Cats at very expensive and not enough is made of it. Ours has

Pet plan 500, fle treatments £160, annual jabs £49, five weeks of cat feeding £350, food 500 ish, And that's the minimum (ok, he could have cheap supermarket food). About £1600 per annum. Have just shocked myself.

But really when do you see the costs broken down/
