We've been offered a 13 week old male. Black and white and apparently absoutely gorgeous. He's long coat too which is a requirement (dh is allergic to short coats)

I'm dying to take him but...the madam.

When we had Blue for that weekend, i knew she was going to be a problem but even I underestimated just how bad she reacted.

She was absoutely miserable and refused to come downstairs. The one day she is, she found him and viciously attacked him. He was just too soft to fight back and the fight triggered his IBS badly. In the end we decided he would have to go back as it wasn't fair on either of them.

She's since been neutered and has calmed down so much but she still eyes cats out the window and really doesn't like them.

Is it just wishful thinking? As in we will not be able to get another one until she passes?

You know yourself that cats don't seek out the company of other cats. They're happy in their own company, but you can be lucky and have cats that love each other's company. It's such a difficult decision to make, cos you know that it could go horribly wrong or it could go really well and they'll be the best friends.

Some of my cats have got along famously. I had a gorgeous cat who was very peaceful and embraced all newcomers except one of my cats who he rejected and who has been rejected by my other cats, even my most recent addition, who cannot stand her, so much so, that I have to keep them separate at all times, as she'd make mince meat of her if she got a hold of her.

Wish I could be more positive about it, but it is trial and error, along with all of the recommended cat introduction tactics.

That's what I'm worried about. I don't want to upset her and make her feel turfed out

But sometimes I think she's lonely too. Whenever we go out she sits at the window watching us and waiting for us to come back. So I was hoping for her to be able to have some form of company. But like you said she might reject him completely and we have to live a life of two seperate cats, not what I want

I get this - I'd love to have 2 (or more) cats because one is great, wouldn't 2 be better?! But the furry girl draped across me does not do other cats - I've tried once - her personality is beautiful on her own and pretty vicious and sneaky otherwise.... sigh.

I wouldn't, I tried to introduce a male kitten to my two existing male cats. After 6 months of careful introductions and scent swapping they still hated the kitten and would fight any chance given. I ended up rehoming the kitten to my mum as the fights and growling through doors was awful.

Yeah we decided on not doing it.

It wouldn't be so bad if she was a loving cat..but she's so hot and cold with us. One day she loves cuddles the next you risk a finger if you try to touch her.

Sounds normal for a cat.
