Incident at vets - opinions please

hello all - would welcome views, there was a thread recently about how quickly fur grows back which has reminded me I wanted to ask this question.

I have to take my cat to be weighed at my vets, sometimes groomed and claws trimmed if needed. The nurse does all this though I usually go into the treatment room first to take cat out of carrier then sit back in waiting room. This time the nurse took the carrier from me in the waiting room and straight into the treatment room. I waited...and waited. started wondering what was taking so long, trying not to worry (I am quite an anxious person).

She eventually came out and apparently had been a nightmare to get out of the carrier and had poo'ed and pee'ed everywhere so they had to clean her up and shave some fur off her tail. I didn't think more of it and apologised saying I'd have helped clean up if I had been in the room.

But this happened a while ago now and please knock some sense into me...my cat's beautiful big bushy tail has really been reduced to a wisp. It feels quite drastic action to take. I do always let the vet/nurses get on with whatever they need to do and trust them implicitly. But did they really need to do this without telling me first? Am I being far too precious? Thanks.

I think you're being a bit precious. It's only fur and will grow back. It would I suppose either have been that or trying to give him a bath. Maybe it would have been good to mention it to you first but I don't think they've done anything particularly wrong.

Why does the cat need to be groomed at the vet? Why weighed? (Mine are done weighed once a year!) Why claws trimmed?

thanks TCN. I think that's what I needed to hear. as the months have gone by and the tail looks so wrong, it has made me dwell on it and we are due to go back to vet soon.

but as you say, it is just fur and its growing back (slowly), and I know she has't come to harm. i have also just realised thread title sounds a tad dramatic .

I have a cat that needs to be groomed (well, shaved really) at the vet Wolfie (stroppy persian). But then he has to be anaethetised to have it done. And in that case, in the same circs, they could have washed his tail.

Good point though. If he is being done while conscious then why does the vet need to do it?

wolfie she's on a weight loss program and they request she comes in for regular weighing, she also changed diet on their recommendation and they are trying to ensure the dosage is right.

she doesn't go out much (by choice) and only has claws trimmed if really needed, they wouldn't do it otherwise, nor would I ask.

she has had to be groomed there as long-haired and was becoming matted at back, wouldn't let me go near with brush.

Buy baby scales and weigh cat at home. Also you might like to read up on what a waste of money prescription diets are and look at switching to a good grain free food and managing her weight yourself. My friend had great success getting weight off her cat with Honeys Real Cat Food and they offered free nutritional advice from a specialist vet.

I get my Persians bums shaved at the vets. They always point out they are not professional groomers. They usually shave it completely baild rather than just a trim. A groomer shaved both their tummies last year. Took 9 months to grow back. Snorg currently has a wet urine soaked tail. As it's been bandaged up. I wouldn't have a problem if they shaved it. It pongs.

Witwoo thanks for food recommendation. I didn't realise vet recommended food was a waste of money but will research it. She's on veterinary HPM which doesn't have cereals in it. I want to do best for her & I did have a tendency to give more rather than less.

Omg toddlertea how on earth did a groomer manage to shave their tums? They must be very docile.
