Nervous...

So our lovely little cat has gone out this morning for the first time since she came to live with us 4 weeks ago. She is about 1 and was found abandoned with her kitten.

Following advice on here I lifted her food after dinner last night and then went out with her. She spent about 15 minutes pottering round our garden then came back in and I gave her a little salmon. She then went out in the garden for about 10 minutes and I called her, she came back and I have her another little bit of salmon and a fuss, which she snuggled in for. She then went back out, over the farm track and into the field opposite... and now I can't see her or find her... it's been about 30 minutes.

Will she come back? Will she be ok? I'm feeling horribly nervous!

Try not to worry - by the sounds of it she has lots to come back for - salmon indeed?!

Ha, i picked it up reduced yesterday in preparation for today. I've never had a cat before but I am besotted with her. The dc keep crying and blaming me that she's 'escaped' as I've been so hot on keeping the door shut for 4 weeks... I've smiled breezy and told them it's fine but I'm stressing!

If you're worried, go and call her, do you have some treats you can rattle? I wouldn't worry too much, but when you get her back give her the biggest fuss to date, really really reward her for coming back, then maybe leave it a little longer before letting her out again. At least a good few hours if not tomorrow.

She's back I went for a walk up the track and called her, she came bouncing out of the field soaking wet and covered in mud. She followed me home and I gave her a little more salmon. I've given her a big fuss and a cuddle in a fleecy blanket. I'll keep her in now til after school run tomorrow, I don't have to go anywhere then til the afternoon so she can have another play out then! Thank you for the support (I realise I'm crazy!) Dc are only 4 and 2 so haven't had to deal with the playing out of my sight thing yet

You're not crazy in the slightest! You just love your cat.

This will cost you a fortune in salmon. There's a cat on here who only comes in for cream.

She kept sitting on the fire guard, looking at the (unlit, empty) fire and then accusingly at me, so I've lit the fire - a full 5 hours earlier than usual! She's now happily basking on the rug. I've shoved the rest of the salmon in individual pieces in the freezer in case of emergencies

I bet if a human asked you to light the fire 5 hours early you'd tell them to put a jumper on.

Our cat has his own hot water bottle in his bed every night.

The kids get told to go grab a jumper or run around more! Poor little cats who've been kicked out to run around muddy fields can't possibly be expected to be Cold though, can they? Poor delicate little kitten

They give you bloody heart attacks when they first go out. My little boy (who past away aged 5 last year) got out once and I spent 2 hours looking for him only to come home soaked to the skin to find him asleep in his hiding spot under the bed... bastard! I swear I got another grey hair from that.

I'm afraid to say that it doesn't become a whole load better with time in my experience. Even if they're much older and much more experienced, you can start to pace if they vary much from their normal routine.

They, of course, will saunter back with a devil-may-care attitude to them.

Thus far she has been a reasonably easygoing overlord. As long as I light the fire, feed her salmon and sit down when she demands so she can sit on me! She even sleeps downstairs in her own bed (in front of the fire). I'm truly feeling the love

I thought that the salmon was for high days and holidays. Is she putting pressure on you for it?
