Pooping beside the tray....

I am now looking after a 13year old cat in my home for an elderly relative who can no longer cope. She (the cat) seems to be getting used to us but still seems very on edge at every little noise like she is constantly on high alert. I assume this will settle as we have only had her two weeks. Anywho, my problem is she likes to shit beside the litter tray, not in it! In her old home she would go outside but after a few altercations here with local cats she is unwilling to go out. She pees in the tray. Any advice?

Does she stand in the tray and stick her bottom over the edge, or does she not stand in the tray to shit at all?

Answer to problem 1 - get a hooded tray.
Answer to problem 2 - Try two trays. If that fails put some sort of plastic mat/puppy training pad next to the tray.

A mat is a great idea, I'll try that. Thanks!
