Smelly cat

Our 6 month old (neutered female) kitten is smelly.
We use cats best litter and we think she is playing in there? It's changed regularly and clumps removed daily etc.should I change her litter? She eats royal canine kitten dry food and Felix wet.
What should I do? She is healthy just smelly. I have never had a smelly cat before. Have even bathed that fixed it but she smells again today. Poor hygiene on hr part???

I use Catsan, it absorbs the urine and also the smell. Im sure she will learn a sense of cleanliness as she gets older OP :-)

Does she smell of poo? Is she cleaning herself? Felix isn't a good food quality wise so that could make her poo smelly.

Orientalcatlady · 14/12/2016 13:07

I don't think he is cleaning herself as she should be.
What is the best wet food? When we got her she was on Felix which is why I have continued? Last cat ( male neuter) never smelt bad he also went out and didn't eat Felix! Arrr what do I do

I feed most of mine butchers classic cat food. It's grain free and easy to get hold of (Tesco, Sainsbury's, pets at home stock it for sure). Around £10 for 24 tins, usually a little more at PAH but regularly on offer. There's lots more premium brands but make sure they are always a 'complete' food rather than 'complementary'. Zooplus has a good selection.

I'd see if that made a difference first, but you may have to run a brush through her if she isn't bothering to clean. One of ours doesn't bother to clean his bum after going to the litter tray so gets a quick wipe with a baby wipe - the shame! Blush

Orientalcatlady · 14/12/2016 16:07

I will try that, thank you!
I don't expect cats to smell bad, our old boy occasionally came home smelling of perfume Hmm but was always pleasant to smell. This little one lacks hygiene I think. Will try different food. Now the litter??? I have never used cats best before it's good but my cat smells? If the old boy needed to be kept in we used wood pellets no smell and he was long haired. Girl kitten is short haired. Could it be lack of hair around her bottom making her smelly??

Could it be her anal glands? Sometimes they need emptying (don't try this at home!!). They can be really stinky

lovelycats · 14/12/2016 17:03

Have you seen the vet about it?

I second the bum gland thing - it's an awful fishy smell. If she's not grooming there could be a reason behind it. I would definitely see the vet.

Orientalcatlady · 14/12/2016 17:52

Would anything be visible??

Check its not an ear infection, this happened to our cat took a couple of days to realize what it was as we though it could be bad breath. He really stunk.

Orientalcatlady · 14/12/2016 18:03

She has seen vets recently as was spayed last month. Being smelly is not new or sudden. Would they have picked up she had a problem when she was with them? Or should I just take her in?

The ear infection was obvious when we looked , could see loads of crusty stuff. The vet cleaned it out whist cat was sedated. This was the only time the cat has been smelly I thought cats didn't smell so probably you should get her checked out

lovelycats · 14/12/2016 18:07

I would make an appointment to discuss the smell particularly. They probably wouldn't investigate that much during a spay. I know when my boys have pooped, because when they come in there is a faint 'anal gland' smell (sorry...). But on the whole they are pretty odourless. Tiny kittens can be stinky and messy, but at 6 months I wouldn't expect my cat to be smelly.

Orientalcatlady · 14/12/2016 19:10

It's a pooy wiff around bottom and paws. I will take her for a check up!
