She was 18, and I got her from a rescue when she was 14. She had an overactive thyroid and, more lately, failing kidneys - and also the sweetest nature ever. Hated to think she might be in pain; her kidneys were finally going and she looked so uncomfortable. Keep thinking I can hear her in the house :( I cried for ages and they let me leave the vets by the side door instead of going out through the waiting room. No more being woken up by her sleeping next to my face (or prodding it to make me get up and feed her) and her purring. Sorry can't say this in real life so I'm saying it here. Thanks for listening

It's very hard, I know. I'm so sorry.

CondensedMilkSarnies · 10/12/2016 02:10

I'm so sorry X

Hidingtonothing · 10/12/2016 02:55

So sorry idid, she was a lucky girl to have someone who loved her enough to look after her until she had had enough and was brave enough to make the hardest of decisions when the time was right for her. Sending you a hug and Flowers

Littlemissindependent · 10/12/2016 06:33

So sorry. It's an awful thing to have to go through. I know it doesn't feel like it now, but it will get easier x

AutumnalLeaves38 · 10/12/2016 07:19

Oh, ididyeah Flowers

I do feel for you. I've been in your position and, even knowing deep down that sparing them from suffering and pain is absolutely the right decision, it doesn't feel like it at the time, does it?

But you obviously gave her kind, loving companionship and a safe home...that's a wonderful gift for you both to have shared.

I hope the precious and special memories soon replace the current, more poignant ones, and bring you comfort x

I thoroughly recommend Cats Protection Support, if you ever feel talking to someone who truly understands would help (or you want to add your cat to their online Memory Wall?)...

I'm so sorry, she sounds adorable. What a wonderful thing you did to choose an older cat who are often overlooked in rescues, and give her so much love for the rest of her life.

Wolfiefan · 10/12/2016 08:13

I'm so sorry for your loss. She was lucky to find you and be so loved.

Aww I'm so sorry for your loss. My cats are only 3 and i already have a deep attachment to them, the thought of eventually losing them, fills me with dread. You were very fortunate to have 18yrs with your fur baby and it sounds like she had a very loving home and a good life. I hope your memories give you some comfort. Gone but never forgotten.

catbrushblanket · 10/12/2016 08:13

So sorry OP, you sound like a lovely cat owner. She was lucky to have you.

phoebe2016 · 10/12/2016 08:14

Sorry, just realised you had her since she was 14. That was lovely of you to take her on and give her love and comfort in her twilight years.

LivingInMidnight · 10/12/2016 08:32

Flowers I'm so sorry. How lovely for her though that she found her perfect home for her last years. You've done the right thing for her, just remember that.

ididyeah · 10/12/2016 13:23

Thanks so much for the messages, all of you, they have really helped. Somehow didn't expect to have to make that decision so soon really, despite her age and everything, even though you know it might well happen some day! And you're right Phoebe, I do feel very fortunate to have had her for the time I did - she was lovely. Big hugs to all of yours too. Thankyou Flowers

I keep forgetting to do the bolding of names. Thank you for the links Autumnal, I'm reading now and it's also really helpful.
