ragdoll cats

DH and I are looking at getting this type of breed. They look completely adorable but is there anything we need to be aware of or particularly look out for. Are any of you familiar with the breed and could you recommend a breeder or advise where to find a kitten? I have seen some advertised on gumtree/preloved sites which I am uncomfortable about using but maybe that's unfounded? I would be very grateful for any advice...

We have had several years of experience with 4 adorable little Ragdolls!
They are the perfect family pet (for us anyway) however things to be aware of:

As a breed most people will recommend they be indoor-only cats; the four we have had show no intention of exploring beyond their warm, comfortable home!
If you are leaving them alone for periods at a time (e.g. work), you should consider getting two cats so they can keep each other company and play together.
They are very fluffy - we are always lint rollering our jackets before we leave the house!
Ours have always been very loving and enjoy snuggling up for a cuddle at any time of the day/night!

I'm not sure how helpful the above has been Wilderness but I'll always share the love for ragdolls

Thank you for responding catslave. Just wondering where you got yours from? Do you think it's ok to use gumtree type sites?

My mum has a 15 yo indoor Ragdoll , he's friendly ,not cuddly , definitely not a lap cat , will sit next to you but only when he fancies it . He has never shown any inclination to escape the house but likes a constant temperature so heating in winter ( even overnight) and fans / AC in the summer . Totally agree with the pp about the hair , it gets everywhere . We got ours from someone who was a very successful show breeder at the time .

Have you spoken go your local rescues? They'll help match a cat to you. Ours is a beautiful ragdoll cross - she loves a warm lap and I totally agree with PP about needing a lint roller or few! She is an indoor cat and we were told when he got her that she should always be kept indoors or in a safe/fully enclosed outdoor area.

My DM has one and he's very affectionate and a lap cat. I've always had rescue cats from cats protection league, we're going this weekend to re home an older black cat on their website who has been there a while. Perhaps look on your local website?

Personally I wouldn't use Gumtree or other similar sites to purchase a pet but that's just personal preference.
We have found breeders for all our kittens through the Ragdoll Cat Club website.

The contact available via the website was very helpful in helping us get in touch with breeders... They are also able to put you in touch with ragdoll rescue associations, overall just very helpful people!

Hi OP! Would you consider a rescue cat instead of a ragdoll? Most shelters are at capacity at the moment, which means that friendly strays are put back on the streets, after being neutered (if they're lucky). I know there are several breed-specific rescues, could you look into whether there is one for ragdolls? I understand the appeal of a particular breed, but I think cats are less true to breed than dogs and the world really doesn't need more kittens...
