Lost my cat tonight.

My beloved 8 year old cat was hit by a car/van tonight outside of our house and killed. We're absolutely devastated, especially the DCs. It was quite unusual for him to want to go out at that time of night but he was sitting by the front door so I opened the door and off he went.

Whoever hit him didn't stop - he was found by some girls who knocked on doors in the road until they found us. We're all absolutely gutted. I've lost pets before but we've been lucky that they've been elderly and whilst it's still been absolutely awful, I've had comfort in the fact they've lived a good life, and experienced a peaceful death (PTS).

Just absolutely numb at the moment and wondered if anyone else has been in this position?

I'd bought him a Christmas stocking today.

I had a house cat and was going away for a weekend with friends- so I took the cat to my brother to be looked after. Called me after 2 days to say the cat had magically gotten out the house meaning the dozy twat left a door open and couldn't find him anywhere. Took me over a week to find out from a neighbour when I went knocking on doors that he had been run over.

Year after- my dog got away from my Mum on a walk (after me telling her THREE times not to let her off her lead) and ran into a road and got hit. She was genuinely a good dog- she just knew my Mum was a soft touch and so took advantage while she could. She was bloody fast and there was no way my Mum could of run after her in time.

It's going to be tough for a few days- the best advice I can give you, even though it's going to hurt, is to gather up all his things and put them in a cupboard somewhere so you don't even have to look at them. Unless of course you feel that will make things worse for you. I found especially when my dog died looking at her bed, food bowls and even going into the garden and finding a dog poo just made me feel worse.

OP I am so very sorry. I've been through something similar recently and it's beyond heartbreaking. The pain feels unbearable. I can't offer any useful advice, I can only send you sympathy. The early days are hard, I hope you're getting some sleep. X

Yes, we lost both our cats on the road, one a few years after the other, not at the same time. It's absolutely heartbreaking, and you'll keep imagining you see him scooting into the room or up the stairs behind you.
Their presence seems to linger on somehow for a while.
We buried ours under a tree in the garden and said a few words, like 'thank you Tartycat for bring a great cat and a good companion. We loved you and we'll miss you.'

I'm so sorry OP

We lost our 7 year old cat yesterday, he had to be pts after a very sudden illness and fast deterioration (you may have seen my other thread). I'm feeling absolutely bereft and heartbroken with a deep deep sadness and lonliness. I actually feel physically sick and in pain.

Grief is such a hard thing and to have had the shock of it being a road accident as well must be just awful.

I don't have any advice really, just offering some hand holding. I'm thinking of you and your family and your dear fluffy baby. Hoping it gets better and easier for us both day by day.

I'm so sorry to hear about your cat. We lost our beautiful boy on the road 6 months ago and it was awful. Eldest DS cried and cried for days (he has ASD and we'd had the cat since he was tiny) because they were best friends and went everywhere together. He'd always been so careful on the road, but a feral colony moved in to the estate and one of them chased him into the road. I was devastated, cried for days.

I'm so sorry. It's heartbreaking. Next week it's 3 years since Barnaby died. He was 3. I drive past where I found him every day and this time of year is particularly bad. At least I know where he is and his brother Troy is sadly with him in pussy cat heaven.

I'm in work today and can't concentrate. Will be glad to get home and try and process what has happened. I'm still in shock I think.
