Does yours listen to you?

I'm used to dogs growing up. My question is do our cats know what we are saying? My six month old knows her name and responds to it yet she doesn't know "get down" from the table/kitchen sideboard even though I say it ten times a day. Are they totally different from dogs in that respect? Does raising your voice make any difference?

She'll know what you mean - she's just disregarding you.

And, how do u have a wee in peace without the carpet getting wrecked and her sounding like she's been strangled.

The bathroom is out of bounds at cozietowers.

Surprisingly yes. They both do. And do what they are told. Fatty was out in the garden once and I stood in the doorway and told her to come in now. And she did. (Had to sit down I was so suprised!) her sister got out of the front door which she isn't allowed to do. She had a little sniff around and when I told her to come back in she did! I
Am sure they fully understand me. But choose to be selectively deaf!

Only if I yell "No, don't!" In panicked horror.

The rest of the time he does what he likes.

I agree that they understand you they just choose to ignore you.

Yes, they understand every word. They just don't care.

It's down to your relative standings, really, I think. If you're Top Cat, they'll listen. If you're not, they won't.

She knows "I'm going to work be a good girl" she jumps on her bed when I say that.

My cat knows every word I say for example:
"Leave it alone" means he'll stop, look at me, then knock the fucking thing over anyway.
"Get down" means he'll get down, then jumpo back up when I'm noir looking, rinse and repeat for an hour.
"Stop scratching the sofa" means he'll stop scratching the sofa... For now...
"Leave the milk" means he'll pause for a nanosecond be cause he realises he's been caught and drink as much as he can before I grab him.
"Come here" means he'll start where he is.
"Stay there" means he'll go where I'm going.

Why do I still love the arsey fucker so much?

Anyone else's cats act different when they know you are going to work. I work random shifts so it's not because they know the routine but they certainly behave differently when the blue uniform comes out.

Sometimes
He knows "sit" and "paw"
Nap nap is also well understood, he will paw beside the bed until I'm in it and he can sleep on me
Judging from his reaction he also understands " Oliver? Who shredded the bin bag?" as he legged it shame faced out the window

I am trying in vain to teach my kitten what is and isn't okay and getting nowhere fast (jumping in the toilet/full bath/shower, walking on worktops, scratching/biting etc. Any suggestions? All the other cats I have owned were quite compliant, this one is soooo different.

his name and 'want this?' when he's dawdling about coming in
the fridge door opening when he's in

and he scoots in like a cartoon character if he hears the acrylic top being taken off a tub of cream....
