Moggy warm enough at night?

Hi all. I have a long haired cat but now the weather has cooled significantly I'm wondering if she is warm enough at night. She is shut in the kitchen and has access to a sofa and her cat bed which is only open on one side and I have put newspaper and cardboard underneath it as it is directly on a cold tiled floor.
We don't have the heating on in the night.

We have one of these, you can chuck a fleece over the entrance to keep it extra warm.

You can get self heating pads too.

Thank you. I have a bed thing similar to what you posted fluffy cloud, but putting a fleece blanket over the top would help keep the heat in. A self - heating pad sounds good (for me too!) I'll look into it. :)

We have a heated pad (not self heating though, electric) it gets lovely and warm

We don't heat overnight either, don't forget their wearing fur. He has a hot water bottle tucked under his bed on really cold nights.

Snuggly throw on the sofa? We don't leave the heating on overnight either.

I must confess I've never thought of providing heating for any of our cats . No overnight heating here (or more to the point, no heating unless a woodburner is lit), and they've all seemed to survive just fine.

Our local rescue has semi-feral cats looking for homes & suggest a dry stable or barn with hay etc as a good home environment, so I dont' think heating is needed . . .

Should say we only have the heat pad as cats sleep in the conservatory at night so much colder than the house. I wouldn't bother if they were sleeping in the kitchen without over night heating

I always get the sort with a fur coat.

They can live comfortably in a cardboard box out of the rain.

If you can raise it above floor level, it will be less cold.

We had cats when I was a kid - they slept in the shed (unheated) in cardboard boxes lined with newspaper and old woolies. They had long, fit and healthy lives.

Your cat will be absolutely fine without extra heating.

We leave ours on min temp so if it gets too cold it will come on and take the chill off, moggy has arthritis so cold makes it worse.

It will be coldest on the floor. How about lifting cat bed onto sofa at night as kitchens tend to be very cold places at night without carpeting curtains or anything that retains warmth. I have been warmer in a stable with straw and which is extremely good at insulating
A cat with a long coat does not necessarily have the thick undercoat of a native dsh or the thick skin. Once kitchen door is shut to rest of house unless kitchen 'inside' house its then going to get colder than the inside of the house. Cats can tolerate heat but not so good at cold. Cardboard box with newspaper and blankets excellent idea.

Try to experiment during the day putting out various options and you will soon see clearly the preferred option and it will soon change as it gets colder!

Haha talk about spoilt cats, I am sure their fur is quite warm enough if they are inside but I too have a duvet and sleeping bag for my elderly cat on her own sofa in the kitchen just in case she is is cold.
She isn't allowed into carpeted areas at night as she often has "accidents".
In the morning I often find she has made herself into a duvet/sleeping bag sandwich so she must enjoy the warmth.

We don't have the heating on overnight and it's never even occurred to me that our cats might be cold! They like to sleep upstairs (one on a cushion on the landing, one on a soft chair). But it's not cold downstairs, our house is well insulated and not draughty. They can always sleep on a chair if they find the floor too cold.

Bikerlou - a cat who is cold would behave in the way your cat has. You could be sure your cat was warm enoufh to not do that if it didnt!

If it's a young cat it's probably fine. Ancient ones do need a bit extra though. A heated pad or one of those microwave bean bag things would help an old cat.

You can always microwave a rice bag and put it under a fleece. Works for humans, too.

Thanks for all your comments. I have put extra newspaper under the bed on the floor and covered over with a fleece and the sofa is available with a blanket built into a nest for her!
