Please help - desperately anxious about my cat

My poor 9 year old girl has had an intermittent cough for a while, so she went to vets today who gave her heart and lungs a check and said they were fine and said she has sore throat so gave her an anti-inflammatory injection and a prescription for medication to help with her throat. He also took her temperature which was ok. She's been back about half hour or so and since has had quite nasty diarrhoea and is really restless, was panting a little but has now stopped panting. I can't make my mind up whether she's stressed about the vets visit (she's a house cat) or whether it's something else I need to worry about - perhaps a bad reaction to the medication he injected? Any advice much appreciated; I'm beside myself with worry. She's so special to me I don't know what I'd do if something happened to her

It does sound like stress. I would let her calm down and see how she is in the morning.

Poor wee thing doesn't like the vets much.

She wasn't too bad when she was there but didn't like the car journey and is frantically washing her bottom - perhaps the thermometer hurt her?

Perhaps so - or if she had diarrhoea, she might not like the way she smells etc. See how she does later.

Thanks for your replies. She's started to relax a bit now but still breathing a little quicker than normal but not panting and has stopped maniacally grooming for the moment. Bless her. I must go to the docs about my anxiety I've been rubbish today

Bless her. Sounds like it was quite stressful for her. Keep an eye on her tonight, try and act normal, let her sit on your lap or whatever she usually likes of an evening but don't overfuss her and see how she is in the morning.

My poor girl has licked her bottom absolutely red raw!!! I've been down to the emergency vets and got a buster collar for her to stop the licking and have bathed it in salt water and put Vaseline on it. Any further suggestions would be gratefully appreciated. I'm dreading leaving her for the day tomorrow

She's Peeing and pooping fine, no diahrroea however it's spelled. She's ok with the collar and it seems to be doing the trick stopping her licking, however all hell just broke loose when one of the other cats came in and thought that she was an imposter because she looked different, It's just a nightmare. Massive, massive fight broke out and I didn't have enough hands to break it all up which was absolutely not what she needed at all and my arms are shredded to ribbons. I'm absolutely beside myself.

This sounds like your anxiety is the real issue here so maybe seek help for that

I suffer with anxiety, but was only diagnosed about 18 months because that was the first time really I had been to the doctor about it. In retrospect I had lived through years and years of needless misery.

Now I have appropriate medication my life is revolutionised. It's not that I don't get anxious, I can just cope with it more easily.

I can understand why you are anxious about your cat. However I reckon she'll be fine. You need to look after yourself too though. You can pm me if you want to chat, xx.

I don't sound harsh at all so no need to speak on my behalf. I sound factual. I understand anxiety and this obviously isn't about the cat as the reaction is so disproportionate

My advice is to seek help. Nothing harsh about that whatsoever

Yes I agree I know I need to get my anxiety treated. I usually self-manage with mindfulness techniques but it's all gone out the window as I'm under a bit of pressure at the moment - house up for sale, new job, poorly cat was the final straw. I'm ridiculously attached to this particular cat she's always there when I need a hug so I think that's why!!

If she's had diarrhea, the licking might be due a bit of "ring sting".

Mindfulness is really helpful in dealing with anxiety, but I understand you have several stressy things going on in your life, so can be difficult to find the time, then relax properly into it.

Beta-blockers help me deal with my anxiety, do try to make some time to see your GP?

I've been out at work all day just about to head home to see how she's getting on. Will update later.

Got back and she's had a poop and it was all stuck in her long hair spoke to vet about praps getting a prescription for some cream for it without taking her there again and she said just shave/clip it and put sudocreme on it.

Glad all is well -ish. I think groomers do 'sanitary trims' on cats if you don't want to do it yourself. Sudocrem works on babies so if the vet says it's OK then that is excellent and cheap!

My vet nurses will trim my Persians knickers. With the disclaimer that they are not a professional groomer.

I can't taker her out again I don't want to stress her out anymore she's had a rubbish few days. I covertly trimmed her with scissors last night. She's such a good girl she just let me do it. No bites no scratches. That's why I love her to bits she's a diamond.
