Cat antibiotics - injection vs tablets?

The ginger peril has begun limping on his back paw today. This is the 3rd time this year (once was with ex-owner in Jan).

Examined both times by vet who couldn't see anything wrong and diagnosed an infection. Received antibiotic and anti-inflammatory injections and improved within a week.

Both times produced a rather large bill (same vet).

Does anyone know whether I can request a prescription and buy amoxicillin online (from a reputable source)? I'm guessing this will still necessitate a consultation fee (£40) plus Rx cost plus cost of drugs.

Yes, you can do this, but really if your cat has an infected bite they need antibiotic straight away, not in a few days when you have posted off a prescription and had tablets posted back to you. I doubt it would save you much on a 5-10 day course of tablets, though it can save considerable amounts on long term medication. We charge £11 for a written prescription.

You would need a prescription to buy the antibiotics online, I believe. There would be a consultation and prescription charge for that.

Regarding your question though, for me it would be injection because my cat (also a ginger ninja) is the very devil to get tablets into and it saves me from getting clawed and bitten to shreds - only to find that the git still managed somehow not to swallow the sodding tablet anyway.

Thanks all! I guess I'm shocked at the cost of vet treatment but it makes sense when broken down.

Definitely injection, although DH has to take him for that as I'm so needle phobic I nearly passed out! The one time I had to take him the vet called in one of the nurses as she remembered!
