Munchkin cats?

PikachuSayBoo · 19/09/2016 15:08

Dd wants a munchkin cat. I'm quite happy to get another cat and have googled to see what the heck a munchkin cat is and I have alarm bells ringing.

Does anyone have one? Ive read about possible spinal problems but then other websites are saying spinal problems haven't been a problem.

Can they go outside? Can they jump over fences, etc?

Current cats go out. I'm worried it would go out and get stuck somewhere.

Even ordinary rescues quite often have pedigree cats. My local RSPCA has had a Persian and a pair of Cornish Rex recently plus 19 oriental cross breeds, including 3 litters of kittens, which were dumped outside in a dog crate. And Hugo who looked like a lion and was to be "ideally rehomed on an island with no pets, livestock or wildlife"!

SealSong · 20/09/2016 14:15

Ha ha, Hugo sounds awesome, Weeds Smile

Weedsnseeds1 · 20/09/2016 17:04

He truly was, Seal. He was kept under secure Hannibal Lectoresque conditions and only allowed out for his solitary perambulations once all other animals were shut in. I wanted him, but my tiny rural village was deemed insufficiently free of other life forms. He eventually went to an arable smallholding in the middle of nowhere.

RubbishMantra · 20/09/2016 17:56

Ah, I'm glad the force of destruction that's Hugo found a home!

What a slightly sinister character he sounds!

MCat went through a murderous stage, when I was first seeing ddDH he'd frantically check his place for dead mice before I came over, and we'd often find live mice in our shoes, and once in a coat pocket. It tailed off completely after he killed 4 young stoats within 2 days. Sad I suppose he felt he'd reached his personal best.

He liked the chickens though, he'd hang out with them, and they'd come in through the cat-flap to peck at his food. To this day he still makes "bwaaark" chicken noises.

Hugo had been returned after first home following some unspeakable crime (possibly involving prey with collars). I ended up with the BlackBlob, who has turned out to be some sort of enormous sub-species of dog, who pads around after me like a shadow. He's gorgeous!

Weedsnseeds1 · 20/09/2016 19:48

Hugo was great with people. Recognised an apex predator when he saw one, but everything else was to be slaughtered without conscience or mercy..

Thecontentedcat · 20/09/2016 20:28

How about a Scottish fold, they are lovely cats and very cute

Thecontentedcat · 20/09/2016 20:32

Oh I've just read more about Scottish folds don't get one of those, they look cute but can have lots of problems with their bones, sounds awful!
We have a rescue mog, he thinks he is a supermodel.

FuzzyWizard · 20/09/2016 20:33

Scottish folds are very cute but all suffer from a cartilidge disorder (that's why their ears fold over). Some are worse affected by this than others. I am guilty of liking pictures of them on Instagram etc but I wouldn't perpetuate the breeding of cats with deformities by buying them I don't think.

Will definetly talk to dd about other cats as well and see what the local rescue have. Like I said our current two cats are rescue cats.

Gosh those munchkin cats are cute.
But I don't approve (sniff) of pet breeding.

RustyPaperclip · 20/09/2016 20:47

Cozie, thanks for posting that link, it's very informative. Also echoing previous posters about rescue pedigrees, all of my pedigrees have been rescues and they are/have been fabulous cats.

RubbishMantra I love your tales of MCat, he is such a character Grin

Toddler what a gorgeous cat! Absolutely stunning Smile

CJCreggsGoldfish · 20/09/2016 21:00

I would suggest a visit to a rescue...once she's there she might forget all about the breed, and just fall in love with a cat.

Fluffycloudland77 · 20/09/2016 21:38

I really want Hugonto have an Instagram page charting his life. He sounds awesome.

Weedsnseeds1 · 20/09/2016 21:58

Here be the beast. I wish he had some sort of blog too. "Today I destroyed an invading Rhodesian Ridgeback"

I currently know of the most incredibly loving, cat and dog friendly blind tortoiseshell point rescue cat. She has had the most horrendous start in life and is such a special cat - playful, happy, and able despite not being able to see. She is actually stunted from improper care as a kitten, so is a miniature Siamese. I would adopt her myself if I hadn't become a failed fosterer to a one eyed grump monster!

Oh my goodness Luna she is gorgeous

Where?!

AngelBlue12 · 20/09/2016 22:03

How about a Scottish Fold? They are lovely :)

littleladyluna · 20/09/2016 22:05

I know! Isn't she? She is currently in foster in the Cotswolds but as she is a "special needs cat" the charity who have her are looking for the right home, wherever that may be. She just loves company and her story is heartbreaking. Feel free to pm me for more photos/videos.

Weedsnseeds1 · 20/09/2016 22:23

Oh, what a beautiful cat, Luna

cozietoesie · 20/09/2016 22:25

I think I'd bet against the Ridgeback, Weed. Wink

PikachuSayBoo · 21/09/2016 15:39

Does anyone know about microchip cat flaps off the top of their heads?

If we get a cat of whatever type for some time it will need to stay inside. We have a microchip cat flap to stop random cats coming in. But i think it's free access for going out. Can it be changed so that only the allowed cats can go outside?

Am away from home this week and can't check it.
