noisy cat at night

got a lovely rescue cat a few monyhs back. all fine but one major issue:

he is in at night (and we don't have a cat flap - not feasible at all unfortunately) and is walking freely around the house. by 3 or 4 am he starts waking us up by miaowing loudly. no idea if he wants food (shouldn't be hungry) or wants out. I end up letting him out most nights only for him to howl again an hour later in front of the bedroom window and I do then let him in. he is incredibly noisy. neighbours have also commented

any ideas how to break that night time miaowing? it's really affecting our sleep.

I lock mine in the utility room overnight.

tried that but he just wails. just as noisy....

We had the same,lots of opera singing at 4am REALLY loudly. We just gave him run of the house and a cat flap and now he sleeps on our bed until 4 then takes himself out.

Why can't you have a cat flap? You can even have them fitted into windows if your door can't have one.

Other option is utility room and use ear plugs and hope he settles down.

No real advice, I'm afraid, just sympathy. Mine arrived in a box at my friends house 's an incoming removal van, and they never tracked down the owner so he's mine now, alas. If he gets out at night he fights anyone and everyone which has left him with half an ear and 7 stitches in his tummy as I write. God knows what he's done to other cats, I dread to think. So I keep him in, and he's yowling by 3, 4 or 5am (depending on time of year) for food and the door. He's also worked out that scratching furniture gets an instant leap out of bed.

The longest stretches of sleep I've had are after I play with him (hair elastic on the end of a string, small pleasures, he loves it) and then feed him just before I go to bed. Seems to knock him out for a bit longer. A little bit.

Yes we feed at 11pm too seems to help.

thanks. fed late last night and cat opera only started at 5 am.

Mine has taken to biting my face to make me get up and see to her demands immediately. She normally wants food and about an hour later to go out.
The other two just wait.

I think you might have to reconcile yourselves to a few nights of broken sleep/no sleep while you train him. The non-Siamese in this household (the Siamese being tucked up in bed) would know better than to try it on in that way. Because he is trying it on.

Does he have a tray for nighttime?
