Pissing on the worktops

My cat is 14. Fairly able with 3 legs. He has always done his toilet business outdoors, if we're away for a night or two he uses a litter tray no problem.

In the last few weeks we have come downstairs in the morning / home from work and he has wee'd all over the work tops. We've had to chuck out our chopping boards / toaster / kettle / storage jars of tea etc etc.

We started bringing in the litter tray overnight but he'll only use it occasionally....even when it's there he will have jumped onto the worktop and peed.

Wtf?

Have you a slightly separate bit of worktop? I'd consider going with it and putting a tray up there, grim as it sounds. It seems better than the alternative.
Also I'd probably get him checked out at the vet in case of UTI or other illness.

Maybe a trip to the vets to see if he is ill.

Try pushing large metal utensils on the edge of the benches so if he jumps up they will make a big noise and hopefully scary him off.

Thanks for both of your replies. Unfortunately it's the only but of worktop we have. Good thinking re the utensils, I'll try that (although I'll probably wake up and thin there's a burglar!).

I was at the vet recently (after his first worktop toilet incident) to get his injections and they didn't offer much help. I'll maybe give them a call again though as DH is ready to give him away

Well there's few homes for 14 yo cats with three legs who wee on the worktops so I think you're stuck with him.

Are you sure it's him and not an interloper?.

Failing that I'm guessing urine infection. If you buy an oral syringe from the chemist you can suck the wee into it and the vet nurse can check it for infection. It's £8 in ours to have a urine sample checked.

I'd get him checked first.

Then spray the work tops with citrus spray and lay newspaper over them at night . I take it you can't keep him out of the kitchen?

Plug in Feliway in case he's stressed?

Maybe try foil,apparently cats hate it.

Like Fluffy says, could be an interloper. Do you lock your catflap at night, or tried a Sureflap, which are microchip activated, (presuming your boy's chipped). Has a new tomcat moved close by, and perhaps invading his territory?

He might have been scared outside by another cat, so feels safer peeing at a height?

What kind of litter do you use? Keep it indoors all the time, in the same place, so he gets used to it.

Dame, MCat LOOOVES foil. pull a piece out, and he'll sit on it with a look of satisfaction on his face. Shit scared of packaging though, esp, bubble wrap and bin bags.
He is a strange one.
