Cat first or dog?

We want to get a rescue dog, hopefully a cat friendly lurcher, once our elderly cat passes away which sadly is not looking like many more months . We also would want a cat, again we'd be open to rescue or possibly an oriental kitten (current cat is an Oriental with bags of character).
Is there a perceived wisdom as to which would be better to get first? Cat so it stands up for itself or dog so it's calmed and used to its surroundings? I do realise that a lot of it will be down to the personality of the dog and cat themselves.
I'm posting this in the doghouse too and wondering if the responses will be much different

We had cats first and then got our dog and found that it worked fine. After our cats have gone we will want to get two more, so it will be dog first and then cats. Though it will be a dog who is used to cats and their beating up ways

We had dog first then got 2 kittens. She was besotted with them!! They loved her immediately!!

I wouldn't get a lurcher with a cat, they have too much chase instinct, they can't help themselves. A few years ago I found a lurcher in the street, covered in blood. I thought it had been hit by a car until a woman came out of the house opposite clutching a dripping towel of cat components....

There are few dogs that I'm edgy about with cats - or other dogs - but lurchers are one of them, especially if rescued (when their upbringing might not be well known.) I've had one .....unfortunate experience with a lurcher and heard of others from reputable sources.

It's a high prey drive dog like a husky. I wouldn't risk it.

If instinct takes over you've got problems.

Another one who agrees mixing Lurchers/ grey hound type dogs is s very bad idea. They've been bred over centuries to chase down small furry creatures.

You can never be sure with dogs and cats, an ex employer of mine had a beautiful, mellow apricot Persian. He was so chilled, she'd sometimes bring him into work, and he'd lie on the front desk demanding tummy rubs.

She and her DP also had a couple of Airedale terriers, who he used to pal about and sleep with. One day they came home to find their gentle little Persian ripped to pieces.

Then again I had a Staffie, supposedly vicious dogs. She was so scared of the new kitten, she would turn her back when he entered the room. He was relentless in making friends with her, eventually she gave in, and let him sleep with her.

I'd suggest to do some research into cat friendly dogs, and adopt an adult who's lived with cats before.

Then again, my ndn has a Lab, supposedly cat friendly dogs. He's not.

*...But our staffie was quite an old girl, and been taught not to go for cats from a pup. She hated most dogs though.
