Is anyone else's cat this stupid?

So for a couple of days my cat has had a bit of a runny bum. She went off her food (fair enough if she has a dodgy tummy)
I worked out why she has had the dodgy tum - I was out in the garden 2 days ago and caught her chewing on the weeds that we had liberally sprayed with weed killer. Kept her in for two days, she is eating her food again and her bum is back to normal.

Please tell me I'm not the only person who owns a cat that prefers to eat poisoned plants rather than the food that is in their bowl?!

Ours ate toxic berries. Threw up 4 times & spent the rest of the night looking very sorry for himself.

Then the next day he did it again so I had to cut them all off.

If it was patio weeds you can put cooking salt on them and water it in, it's very effective.

Ours is stupid. She eats flowers if someone buys me a bunch of flowers I have to put them away or she eats them

She also brought a mouse to me on Thursday (in the garden) only she carries them quite delicately like kittens so she put it down to show me and it ran away and she couldn't catch it again, bless her. That's the third one she's ever caught despite all her efforts, she's just rubbish

That's so sweet, I feel quite sorry for her going to all that effort then losing the mouse.

One of mine went through a phase of eating caterpillars and then voming them back up n the kitchen. I thought she was suffering from some hideous parasite before I realised what they were. The vet was very interested, , asked to keep them and was considering writing a paper on it!!

Ours catches shrews and mice from the woods behind our house. She brings them in live and drops them on the doormat. We didn't realise she had brought a shrew in the other day, it ended up in my partners shoe!

My old boy used to eat bumble bees, he used to sound ever so funny when he meowed after!

How would the cat know your plants had weed killer?

Shouldn't you have kept your cat indoors anyway after spraying any sort of poison on your plants?

Aren't you aware that cats like to chew plants?

I've also seen her trying to stalk and catch birds, it's hilarious. She is always miles away. And they clock her straight away. I've wondered if she has vision problems as she seems to think they're right in front of her and will 'reach' for them, and sometimes they are literally miles away in the sky!

lweji the plants had been sprayed two days before the eating incident - they were already dying. She's normally more interested in the grass and the weed matting in the front garden to chew a dying stinging nettle...!

So, her stupidity is for eating nettles, not weed killer sprayed plants?

And what eating incident? The one where you caught her after she already had the runny tummy for two days? Or did she get a runny tummy 2 days after the spraying? Which is still not great, because that might have been the time it took for the poison to work into her system.

Around here weed killer is being phased out by local authorities because it does have an effect on animals too. It's not healthy. They are cutting weeds by mechanical means rather than spraying.

Regardless, I wouldn't call an animal stupid for eating plants (which cats normally do) that had poison on them.

The nettles had weed killer on them. She started having a dodgy tummy two days after they had been sprayed. Wasn't sure what caused it, she had gone off her food. I was in the garden day two of runny bum and caught her chewing on the weed killered and mostly dead stingy nettle. Kept her in for two days and she's back to normal.

She once caught a fly and had it in her mouth, but didn't manage to kill it. She kept giving me a hurt look as if to say "noone told me it would vibrate my mouth!"

Bibi is a genius. Zara is more of an idiot savant - generally dumb, but occasionally does something unbelievably brilliant out of the blue, then never does it again. The plus side of this is that moving house with Zara is very easy, because all environments are equally mystifying to her, regardless of how long she has lived there.

Yes our cat will chew allsorts of green things, so we have decided not to use weedkiller (dont really like it anyway) as he would still eat them. We caught him chewing my Hemerocallis (Day Lily)...they are all now covered.

He chases his tail and the other day bit it so hard he yelped, then sat dazed for a while

Dgirl cat is as daft as they come. She can't even bury stuff in the litter tray, she scrapes the edges looks surprised that it is still visible and then wanders off with the equivalent of a sauntering walk as if to say 'wasn't me'. She can't clean herself either. She lived wild for a bit before we took her on, while her brother would climb trees and catch wildlife, she stole monster munch, marmite on toast and a duck carcass. She spent quite a while bemused by a frog which kept leaping out of reach, she tries latching on if dh takes his t-shirt off. She can't climb trees and even leaping onto her favourite perch (50cm high and a metre wide) requires lots of thought and anticipation, with a little chirp of pride when she manages it. Her brother will come along later and bury her poo for her and lick her clean with a look to us which says 'look what I have to put up with, and to think I share genes with her, I bet we have different fathers'. She is the loveliest, fluffiest cat, just can't get to grip with cat stuff.

I too have an idiot savant. In the summer she likes to lie in the sun, if you walk near her she will roll on her back for her tummy to be rubbed, and evey time you hear 'donk' as she bangs her head.

She spends half her life looking confused and I have been known to say she has fur on the inside of her head.

But then I got a laser pointer - and she looked at the dot, walked up to me and tapped the pointer in my hand.

I have a cat that thinks he's a dog. We call him cog. Officially his name's Clawdius.
I also have a cat that eats scorpions and venomous snakes. How she's still alive I don't know.
I thought people who had pets didn't use weed killer

I don't use weed killer in my back garden in case cat decides to eat random plants/weeds, I wouldn't put it past him. I use weed killer in my front garden as he doesn't venture there. I hate using weed killer full stop though really. I have weed repellent material with gravel over but the weeds still come through.

Caipora ours is sometimes called a 'dat'. She follows people around, rolls over for tummy rubs - though doesn't bang her head. She is quite happy in a harness which dboy cat clearly spurned at the first suggestion because every self-respecting cat knows that only a dog would agree to be shackled like some sort of slave, and we all know that it is the humans who are supposed to be the slaves in the cat-human relationship. They are allegedly litter mates but so different, even opposite colourings and one short and one longhaired.

GinCat once ate an entire frog. I know this because he started to shake as though he were possessed and then vomited the frog - intact - onto my feet.

He isn't very bright but I do love him to bits.

But then I got a laser pointer - and she looked at the dot, walked up to me and tapped the pointer in my hand.

That's brilliant. Once Zara used the litter tray, then folded all four corners of the liner over into a perfect square parcel and sealed it. My mother was visiting, she came into the room and didn't believe me that a cat had done it. But she never did it again.

ETA: The same cat once got lost in a bush, seven feet from the front door. She was facing the wrong way. I turned her around, she stopped crying and went back into the house.

I adore her.

Where to start?

Boy cat ran face first into a cupboard door one day. How he didn't see it I don't know.

Girl cat 2 is the daftest though. She hunts anything that flies except birds. In particular flies, bees, wasps, butterflies and dragonflies. She brought in a butterfly, let it go in the house and then proceeded to rampage all over the living room in an attempt to catch it again. In the process she ran through DDs bowl of soup, leaving orange paw marks right along the windowsill.

Her other trick if jumping out the living room window, realising she can't get back up and having to run round the back to come in the back door. She then proceeds to do this on repeat until I get sick of having to get up and let her in the back and shut the front window.

Girl cat 1 loves the laser pointer but tries to pick up the red dot with her paw. She then sits looking at her empty paw looking confused. We all find it utterly hilarious.

Girl cat 3 has still not come out from under DDs bed so no daftness to report from her yet.

We had a cat who kept running into doors or falling off wardrobes. He fell off the edge of the bath into the (full) bathtub.

I asked the vet to check his eyesight, as we'd never had a cat with such poor balance problems before. The vet said he seemed normal (although too many knocks to the head would surely have an effect)

Eventually, and unsurprisingly, he was run over and killed

SmallCat is intelligent and cats perfectly. She never puts a paw wrong.

BigCat is another story. She has never really had a clue what was going on. Once we had a pack of attic floorboards standing on end on the landing. She used to jump up and sit on the top of the pack. One day we put it in the attic. She came out onto the landing, looked at where the pack had been standing and jumped up to sit on it. She just thudded into the wall and slid down it, looking confused. She was always a gorgeous fluffy eejit and we adored her for it. Now she's brain damaged and the confusion and walking into things isn't funny, it's heartbreaking. Poor old sausage.
