Make or female cat?

Having lost my much loved boy we will be looking to get s new kitten in a few months.
My last 2 cats have been boys. But are male and female cats very different in personality?
Should I get a girl? ( I feel disloyal replacing my lovely cat so wonder if a girl would be less like cheating on him).
I had been told boys were more affectionate and soppy whilst girls more irritable (like women)???
Is this the case really? I would like to hear from owners of both sexes really.
The cat will be coming to a home with 3 lively young children btw!

I have just moved from my mums house, we had two of each. Neither of the girls would sit with you but would sleep on the bed on their own terms, but were very irritable . Boys much more affectionate and always nearby.

Now have my own two boys, based on how it was before. They are lovely, cuddly little buggers!

Yes my boys were easy loving cats I'm a little scared of owning a female. I just read a thread about cat carriers I never had a problem with my soppy boy 😐.
But I don't want to be sexist about cats 😳

Hopefully you will find one that is perfect , whichever sex - sorry about losing your boy though

I've had female cats but we just 'fit' better with (neutered) males. That's just us though.

I've been owned by both male and female cats. They are all very different. Our two girls are cuddly but tend to be a bit feistier than the only boy we ever had.
I get the feeling of being unfaithful. We lost our old girl just over a year ago. When we contacted the shelter I specified I didn't want the same colour. Stupid I know. But we had black and white and now have two torties. We also went from long to short haired and old girl to baby kitten monsters. So about as different as you can get!

We have a female who is very laid back, affectionate and is a real lap cat. She has a lovely nature.
Personally, I think it depends on the cat rather than it's sex.

We've had both male and female, all the females would only sit with DH or DS whereas the boys tended to get cuddles from all of us. Personally I prefer the temperament of neutered males so it would always be boys for me. Saying that our young male kitten,10months old, isn't cuddly at all yet so I'm just hoping he mellows ☺

sorry to hear about your boy! if getting a cat from a rescue centre they will try to match the cat to the family (but in case of kittens not sure!) e.g. if it is used to quiet home or one with children, pets etc.

I've had both and I think it depends on the cat's personality (and yours perhaps?) Have had both boy and girl cats living in same very quiet house and one was a scaredy cat, the other was gregarious and loved being picked up and brushed.

I also get the feeling of being unfaithful and after my beautiful black boy died, although the rescue centre had a lot of lovely black cats (as is sadly often the case they get chosen last), I didn't want to feel like I was 'replacing' him. As it happened I had an incredible bond with a completely differently marked cat so wasn't a problem.

Just get what feels right for you, I've had grouchy boys and girls so maybe its just me!

Well my newly adopted female shows no interest in being a lap cat yet, or even wanting much in the way of strokes, whereas our old girl would jump up and settle down for a snuggle at the slightest opportunity! So as Pp said, probably more to do with the cat's personality than gender.

We have a boy plus 3 girls. They are all very different in temperament but girl cat 2 is the most cuddly.

I'd suggest visiting a rescue with an open mind and find a cat which chooses you.

It depends more on the cat than the gender - they're all different! But that being said, I have found that boys tend to be more cuddly and girls moody. Our girls are still very affectionate, but it has to be on their terms. I've also found that girls seem to "bond" more to a particular person, whereas the boys are undiscrimately cuddly.

Re the cat carrier though, our worst two are one of each gender, and our second boy doesn't go in easily either. So I think that one really doss depend on the cat's personality.

Well it seems it's not gender dictated according to this thread then 🙂. Yes I have always had neutered boys and orientals which might make a difference? What's wrong with black cats? I always think they are beutiful and rather fancy one myself assuming i can find a kitten wanting a lively home. Is it the witches cat thing?

My female spayed cat is purrrrfect, very affectionate and generally all lovely.

Black cats aren't popular - they, along with black and whites (I think), tend to 'linger' in rescue centres, particularly when they go past the cute kitten stage.

I've always had female cats. Some very cuddly, some a bit more standoffish and one that was quite nervy but affectionate on her own terms with people she knew well but a demon scratch-monster if approached by a stranger. I've just recently adopted a very cuddly female Maine Coon. She's lovely.

I got a male based on them apparently being more affectionate and cuddly. I wanted a real lap cat to curl up with me on an evening in front of the TV. Said cat treats the house like a fast food joint and has only come in the house to eat all summer, I've barely seen him. I'd take a 2 second ear rub right now never mind a blooming fusspot lap cat.

I've mainly had boy animals, except 2 female rats who were skittish and boring. I'm always of the belief that male animals are affectionate and female cats love hunting and bringing gifts.

My boy cats (3) never brought in live creatures or corpses.

I have 2 (beautiful all black) cats- a boy and a girl. They are both lovely natured but my boy is more cuddly and affectionate. My girl likes a little bit of love, but only on her own terms. She runs away from DS (4), whereas my boy cat will sit and have strokes from him now.

Wait till Autumn comes, Olive. The changed weather might bring a change in him also.

Oh Olive that's probably him just enjoying the weather you probably will struggle to even get him out on a cold day.

I'm leaning boy again but have read girls more likely to stay closer to home so safer?
