Licky cat

She licks me on the face, on my arms, legs, basically anywhere she can. Really goes for it, like a dog. And it hurts! Though I admit it's kinda cute.

Any idea why cats do this?

I assumed they like the taste of salt on your skin.

laidbackneko · 10/08/2016 23:09

Ha! I just be VERY salty then Grin

I always think they're scent marking you as theirs. BiteyCat licks us, and it feels possessive/territorial - but also very sweet.

LemonRedwood · 11/08/2016 11:54

I've heard that they are grooming you. This means they see you as part of their family.

laidbackneko · 11/08/2016 12:47

Ah, grooming. I hadn't thought of that!
I've been pushing her away because it's so bloody painful but will that have hurt her feelings?
(Blush at how ridiculously mad cat-lady that sounds Grin)

Nah, my cat is licky too. Doesn't seem too offended when I push him off. He's bonded with another neighbourhood cat and they groom each other; one always pushes the other one off when they've had enough.

Just give her a lovely thank you stroke and fuss in return Smile

Northernlight22 · 11/08/2016 13:32

Mines licky too - I always push her off after a while as its scratchy! She doesn't lick anyone else in the house though, just me.

laidbackneko · 11/08/2016 13:39

It's like sandpaper isn't it!

She'll push her nose in my face most determinedly and if I push her away she'll hold my head with her paws and lick away. With the occasional nip on the nose.
It's annoying and hopelessly cute at the same time ConfusedGrin

I get licked. Not much but enough. Very rough.

I also get bitten on the bridge of my nose to wake me up Hmm

laidbackneko · 11/08/2016 13:49

Oh, and what's the thing about nipping all about? She'll be sitting on my lap, dozing, then out of the blue sink her teeth into my roly poly tummy. Not eyewateringly painful but quite firmly nevertheless. Is she trying to tell me something? Hmm

OP posts:
NeedACleverNN · 11/08/2016 13:49

Yes. Stop touching me

cozietoesie · 11/08/2016 13:51

It's something to do, eh? 'Bite the human and watch them thrash about'. Grin

Not allowed at cozietowers.

laidbackneko · 11/08/2016 13:51

But I'm not touching her apart from her lying on my lap! Confused

NeedACleverNN · 11/08/2016 13:52

It's a cat! They defy logic

laidbackneko · 11/08/2016 13:52

haha, just like a cat to punish YOU for their choice of bedding Grin

BorpBorpBorp · 12/08/2016 10:32

The biting is play, the licking is grooming. You're part of her social group.

FoxesOnSocks · 12/08/2016 10:35

If FoxesCat nips me I say a firm 'no' and he then licks. He's not an aggressive licker though, I don't find it hurts.

RubbishMantra · 12/08/2016 20:48

Colonies of cats lick each other, so they all smell familiar. So she sees you as part of her colony. Little M loves it, he approaches MCat head down and pushes his head into his chest to get groomed. Until MCat gets fed up, and rabbit kicks him around the head.

When Little M was a kitten, he'd wake me up by sandpapering licking my back. Unpleasant, yet endearing.

MrsSchadenfreude · 13/08/2016 09:55

Mine washes my hair. He sits behind me on the sofa, clamps his huge paws on my head and licks lovingly. If I move, I get a sharp rap on the head with a large paw.

laidbackneko · 13/08/2016 21:01

That's really interesting about the colony thing. Makes sense as she's an only cat - I felt very guilty about taking her away from her four litter playmates Sad.

Today she decided to yawn in my face then bite my nose as she closed her jaws Hmm
