Cat Proofing

Sadly it looks as though the London cat killer has struck near me again. Harry rarely goes out of the back garden and he's always in at night, but we are planning on cat proofing the garden so he can't get around the front.

My big worry is we are then advertising we have a cat and he is confined. Am I making him more of a target? I really don't know what to do for the best. Putting on my professional hat I know I can't remove all risks, only minimise them, but it doesn't make me feel any better!

Does anyone have any thoughts please?

In a way yes, you could fit an obvious CCTV camera overlooking your own garden though.

I wish more people kept cats in at night. That poor defenceless cat.

We'll still be getting him in at night, it just means we'll be able to use the garden (we can't at the moment as it would mean making sure he's indoors) and if he doesn't come in I've got a chance of catching him!

I've been weighing up the options and I've got three choices:

Keep him in all the time - not fair to him as he likes to potter outside
Carry on as we are - even disregarding the cat killer I don't want to as I don't like him going near the road
Cat proof - probably the best option as it also means that if things get bad here he can be kept in when we are at work and let him out under supervision

Luckily (in this instance) our garden is overlooked from three side so hopefully that would also be a deterrent.

The latest cat was only a kitten, he's a little bundle of fluff j the picture. RIP, run free at the Rainbow Bridge.

I think most of the attacks happen at night?

Also, they seem to be opportunistic in nature so the non-cat victims are (as far as I know) those who are quartered outside at night anyway. He'll be in at night, I think?

I think most of them have been at night and Harry will be in as normal, although If we're sitting in the garden we'll let him stay out and then get him in. We've got a narrow straight garden so DH and I can just herd him!

I've also thought that if it does get worse here I can keep him in when we're at work and let him out under supervision.

Just do your best, Pink. You can never make things 100% for them so do what you can.

Thanks Cozie. I've got a few other non cat problems at the moment so I think I'm more worried than normal about everything.
