Cat's claws - Cut them? Leave them?

They're in a right state!

One back paw has hardly any claws,I showed the vet,he wasn't concerned and said they lose them when they're out and about. This was 6 months ago and no sign of them growing back yet .

Other claws are flaky and split and he's constantly scratching his post and scratch mat , they look like they could do with a trim and tidy up tbh.

Do I need to trim them? I think he'd let me,he let's me look and them and spread his paw.

Any advice appreciated

I trim my cats claws but he is an indoor cat and they don't get worn down the same.
I just take the very tip off.

cat claws grow constantly and shed they take care of them by themselves usually by crunching off the outer layer which looks a bit painful! ive only known one cat needing help with his claws and that was because he would not do this till it was too late and try and take loads off he inevitably got it stuck half on and half off i would hold the nail while he pulled!

my other cat liked having his nails filed but thats a whole other story

We clip our cats claws... They aren't the biggest fans but are indoor cats and otherwise destroy everything! Also with our 9 month old just means less chance of an accidental injury when they are running around like loons!

I have an indoor Maine Coon and wouldn't dream of clipping her claws or trimming her hairy paws.

She has a loads of things to scratch on. Coir door mats, wall scratch boards...

look in the scratching post or other areas where the cat scratches and your sure to fine them!

another thing i forgot the one cat used to try and groom my nails when i was sleeping if he thought they were too long i would wake up to him trying to pull them off! hence the whole filing nails thing i filed mine then his and we were good personal grooming was his "thing" though he used to wash his paws in his water bowl then demand a clean bowl and he would wash his face look at my other cat (permanently covered in food) grab his head and clean his too any scratch that began to turn a little funny got cleaned out (in my sleep he would yank off scabs and lick them till they were clean when i was asleep) never met a cat like him

I clip mine. He holds his paw out for them to be done

We clip ours - indoor cat who doesn't do much scratching, if I don't clip them she ends up sticking to the carpet!

I have to do the tips of Seniorboy's claws these days. He has too little muscle left - and his arthritis is too bad - to successfully do his front claws and too few teeth to do his back ones.

I only ever had to clip one cat's claws when I fostered, if you do it get the clippers from the vet and get them to show you how.
