Harry and his jaw

Yesterday was six weeks since Harry broke his jaw and had it wired. He was booked in to have the wires out yesterday but the jaw isn't stable enough and the wire has to stay in another six weeks. Unfortunately he'd been sedated again before the vet found out and so I had a very fed up (and hungry!) cat last night. She tightened the wire so I think it's aching as he's looking sorry for himself again.

He's back on 5th April so fingers crossed his jaw has healed by then as I don't know what other options there would be for him.

Aw Heck. I was so hopeful as well.

Has the vet given him pain relief to be going on with?

No, he hasn't got any pain killers this time but he seems ok thankfully. He's eaten (three pouches before 7.30 this morning!) and when I spoke to the vet this morning she said that was a good sign as I was told I might have to tempt him to eat with bits of chicken and scrambled egg...

And there's the problem - Pets at Home have sold out of his favourite food! We have enough for two weeks (two days if he has his way!) and they are supposed to be getting a delivery next week but I don't know how I'll explain it to him if they don't - I'll be getting the look that says I'm a failure as a human being!

I don't think there's a lot else for him to try! He's had Whiskas, Felix, James Wellbeloved, other Pets at Home own brand, Tesco and Sainsburys. I try to give him something that's got a high meat content (which is why he didn't like Whiskas etc) but the only thing he's eaten is the Wainwright's tuna. Everything else was ignored or tasted and then ignored and that includes other flavours of Wainwrights.

Luckily he can eat his biscuits so we can give him those as well.

He is. He's known as the Poor Little Bugger at the moment. It just seems to be never ending for him.

Thankfully no - I don't know who would have gone mad first, me or him! He was supposed to stay indoors until the wire was removed but the vet told us to let him out after about 3 weeks as he was so miserable. Once he was allowed out he perked up. He's never gone far but since this happened he's stayed even closer to home.

There's been a few times when I wondered if we did the right thing having the operation but he's coped really well (better than me!) and whether we did it for him or us. Watching him playing today I know it was the right decision, he was running around the living room and rolling on his back with his paws under the sideboard. Hopefully the wire will be out in 6 weeks time but if not, hopefully the vet can pin the jaw rather than a temporary wire.

I picked up the invoice from the vet yesterday and she had made a note that his remaining teeth are fine, there are no ulcers around the wire and the scab on his chin is what she would expect. Good news for him!

Thankfully Petplan are picking up the majority of the costs. We have to pay 20% on top of the excess but considering it's cost over £2000 so far I'm grateful for anything!

We ended up back at the vets with Harry on Friday evening. We looked at his chin and there was a huge scab around the wire. The vet removed the scab and his skin was inflamed so he was cleaned up and he had an antibiotic injection. We're now cleaning it every few days - I don't think he's impressed! The good news is the vet thinks his jaw is now stable and she's confident the wire should be out on 5th April. If he has any setbacks we'll then discuss a permanent fix for him.
