New rescue cat got out

I'm devastated. I've just bundled dd up in her pushchair and gone out looking for her, shaking a packet of dreamies but no luck. She's been with me less than a week and I've failed her already. What are the chances of her finding her way back?

How much less than a week? Was she very frightened or had she begun to relax?

Either way you will almost certainly find her so try not to worry. Do you know how she got out? Through a window? Through a door? At the back of the house or at the front? Is it easy to get from the back to the front?

What you will need to do is to leave food out especially during the daytime, as there shouldn't be foxes eating it then, and also at night, both at the back and the front of the house if she could be at either side. You need to do this for as long as it takes really. A few weeks if necessary.

It is very likely that she will appear within 24 hours.

If she hasn't then you need to leaflet neighbours.

Finally are you absolutely sure she isn't hiding somewhere in the house?

Well that's good she obviously already sees your house as home. Do you know how she got out?

I'm decorating the spare bedroom and I can only assume she climbed out of the tiniest gap in the window and on to the roof of the shed. I had no idea she's be able to fit through there! Lesson learned.

She's properly your cat now.

Ha, Archcat did exactly the same thing after he'd been with us for 12 days. I remember sitting on the front porch in tears because I was going to have to phone the shelter and fess up that I'd lost the cat after promising to look after him for ever and ever. Cat also looked very pleased with himself when he strolled back an hour later.

We still lock his flap at night and he derives HUGE pleasure from trying to outwit us by slipping out through a door or window. In winter he then sits outside for two minutes clearly freezing his butt off, then begs to come back in, having made his point that he can escape if he wants to.
