Flea collars

Do they work? I normally use monthly spot on treatments on my boys but my youngest absolutely hates it. He goes rigid, hisses, thrashes around then hides behind the sofa. It normally takes a few days before he'll let me touch him again

No, IME they really don't work.

One of the vets who posts recommends Seresto flea collars if I recall. No good for me because my boys hate collars of any description though. If he's that bad about spot-ons would he actually wear a collar do you think?

Thank you, I'll have a look at the brand. He's ok with collars, not thrilled when I put one on him (if he'd stop losing the bloody things I wouldn't have to ) but he quickly forgives and forgets.

He's a sensitive soul in general. Not sure if it's a breed thing - he's a Pixie Bob - but he definitely knows how to have a good sulk.

Of my recent cats, the Siamese go into a right strop. It's a sort of ' Well you may want to play this game called 'Let's see how long it takes you to get rid of a collar' but I don't like it and I'm deeply disappointed in you.'

The Lodger is more subtle. He appears to accept them with a fair grace but it's only a matter of hours before you find them somewhere, broken.

It's a consideration, because I have a memory that eg Seresto collars are quite expensive.

Seresto is very effective, but is a prescription only product so you will have to get it from your bed. You shouldn't use it if you cat sleeps in ( under the covers) your bed.

Haha cozie your Lodger sounds like my older boy! He'll gladly accept a collar but they don't last much longer than a day or two. There must be a very well dressed tree adorned with all of his cast offs around here somewhere.

What about an injection or a tablet?

The injection only stops fleas breeding, the cat can still be bitten to buggery.

The tablet from the vet (confortis?) is very good and has the added bonus of not covering your kids in chemicals when they stroke the cat. The tablet is quite big though so I cut it in half.
