I know Whiskers is really crap for cats but there's an amazing deal on Felix on Zooplus at the moment (88 pouches in jelly for £19) and am sorely tempted.. but if it's rubbish and not healthy then I won't bother.

My gorgeous boy cat has been on urinary food for a year as he had bad crystals but have been advised by vet to move him onto decent, regular food. He's been having Butchers Classic as it's cereal free (as well as cheap) but the above deal feels too good to pass up - especially as I'm ordering his biscuits anyway!!

I don't think once in a while will do any harm. And it's the cheap dried food that is to be avoided at all costs. The wet isn't so much of a problem.

I feed my kitten Felix pouches (hangs head in shame!) he will not eat the Riyal Canin persian food, or Iams or any other dry food.
What's so awful about Wiskas? All my cats have had Wiskas or Felix etc and lived healthy lives....

The plan is to get a happy medium - so his special urinary biscuits for breakfast as they can be left during the day and then a nice juicy pouch for tea - hence looking at the Felix.

I just don't want him to go backwards but was thinking of adding some additional Al water to the wet food as well...?

And I think Whiskers is just padded out with cereal etc so it's low in protein and doesn't keep them satisfied for as long as those with higher meat content. My boy is a pig so thought should avoid or he will just be hassling me all day long!

Our two are on felix and I'm trying to get them off it.

I wouldn't call Felix 'decent' food. Isn't it one of those with a low proportion of actual meat and lots of grain fillers? Cats often seem to like it, but that doesn't mean it's good for them (just like humans really). Maybe not actively harmful in the way that cheap dry food can be, but we definitely found that cheap wet was a false economy, because now we've gone over to high-meat content and grain-free wet food, he eats far less in quantity because he can digest it better. And pouches are particularly bad value for money by comparison with the little square trays or cans. I'd stick with the Butchers if I were you.

Ah, X-post on the high grain content not keeping them satisfied. Yup, I think you'd have problems like that with the Felix too.

I opted for Felix as Whiskas doesn't suit them and I wanted a good I could easily at locally (we live in the sticks!)
They won't eat Butchers Classic.

And Archcat had the same problem with outrageous farting as Wolfie's pair do while on Felix and co (anything with lots of grain filler) - that's completely disappeared now with a high meat content food and no grain.

Felix AGAIL Doubly Delicious meat pouches are what Seniorboy will eat and as he has to have food and needs his meds which are mixed in with it, that's what he's had for some two years now.

I wish I knew what was in it though. He's flat out rejected everything else.

Our boy was on Felix AGAIL when he came to us as a kitten. It's grain free, unlike Whiskas, which is a definite plus point but it does have enough sugar in it to taste sweet.

If you're ordering from Zooplus anyway then you may as well get something good quality like Animonda Carny (some of Animonda's other ranges do have fillers) or Bozita for about the same price. My pro tip is that if you're buying from Zooplus to have a look at bitiba.co.uk, it's the same company but a no frills version so it doesn't have all of the stuff you can get on Zooplus and you need to spend an extra tenner to get free delivery but is a fair bit cheaper.

I also get food and litter from zoofast.co.uk - cheaper again than bitiba (sometimes by a lot) and has a good range of products but not everything you can get from Zooplus. They do have both Bozita and Animoda Carny though. The cut off for free delivery is only 25 quid and you can build up a discount for life of up to 3% after spending a certain amount with them.

Mine rejected their good quality Animonda Carny a few months back and are now ONLY eating Felix Doubly Delicious . Oh the shame...

Portia is old so entitled to be fussy. The other two are just bolshy!

They have Royal Canin Gastro for dry as well. The gastro is grain free and doesn't upset Ophie's tum!

I started off on the wrong foot with Seniorboy by assuming he hadn't got long for this world so indulging him mightily. As a result, he's had 7 (7) years of living just how he likes it. Blighter.

I reckon I spend more on their food than ours!! We get 'Morrisson basics' . They get Doubly Delicious, tuna and chicken fillets !!!!

What's wrong with Whiskas wet food? Novice here!

Whiskas has loads of cereals in it (including wheat which I don't think humans should even eat) which cats shouldn't be eating because their digestive and metabolic systems just aren't set up to process it. It sets them up for dental problems, weight problems and diabetes. The meat is also low quality - reclaimed meat like you get in cheap sausages and ham. It's the equivalent of giving your cat McDonalds for breakfast, lunch and dinner every day.

Oh dear. Recommendations for a similarly priced, supermarket available alternative?

Butcher's Classic would be your best bet.

PreciousPussGirl is 7, is she still OK on Butcher's even though it isn't 'senior'? Also recommendations for biscuits? Currently she has Purina senior.

Harry's coming up to 11 and refuses to eat senior food so we've kept him on adult. I asked about Butchers on here and was told it's fine for a senior cat to have it. Unfortunately Harry wouldn't eat it so the local rescue will be getting a few tins!

I think the life stages food is mostly a gimmick - if you look at the ingredients and nutritional information there's rarely much of a difference. The main difference tends to be that the senior stuff has slightly fewer calories but if you're feeding a decent wet food then most cats will regulate their intake anyway. We feed Animonda Carny and Bozita on rotation and found that a tin of Bozita, which has a little less protein and fat, goes quicker even though they get bored of it faster.
