Scaredy cats

We rehomed these two cats now called Cookie and BMO about 3 weeks ago and we have barely seen them since. They spend their whole time hidden in a cupboard or creeping about when we aren't looking. If we do see them BMO runs like mad and cookie hisses. Is there anyway we can get them to like us?

3 weeks isn't very long to a cat. Try taking the hiding place away so they have to get used to you all.

I have a very scardey-cat, and his sister is a cat with a 'tude, so it's a mystery. There's a throw on the sofa and he makes a little tent for himself there

Feliway helps a lot. Also leave them be but do go and see them. Do things like read, have a Cup of tea (my kitten was begging for a rich tea biscuit after hiding from me...!), play with them.

They need to get used to you. If more than one person living there get them to come into the room and talk with them. My mum and a friend used to come round and I deliberately had them in cat's hiding room so he got used to us talking.... I now think the cat is a ladies man and he earwigs - well me and my flatmate who has been with me a few months (didn't have one before and not when kitten arrived) it's so funny he will run from where ever he is (split level maisonette) if we're talking especially upstairs and he'll just hang around. Me myself no, her by herself no!

They're running and hissing of course because they're scared of you...

Being older and also related they want to stick together. Another thing which helps is cat treats.... Helps lure them out.

Thanks for all your advice. I had a bit of a break through today. While taking the rubbish out (they hide in a cupboard by the front door) they both came out very slowly, I leant down and they let me stroke them both. They where purring and everything then youngest dc ran out and they where gone.

Take things slowly; don't impose yourself on them. Just go about your business. They are scared; give them time.

Massive step forward for cookie she just walked in the loving room came up to be stroked then went and sat at the end of the sofa next to dp. Think it may take alot longer for BMO
