Old cat just had second seizure

Our old boy is 14 and had his first seizure about a month ago. Collapsed, jerked violently on the floor flinging himself around, foamed at mouth. It lasted about a minute, then his back legs didn't work for a few minutes then he came round all ok.

I decided not to take him to the vets after reading up about them as I didn't want to stress him with tests which may not find a reason for them, as didn't know if it would be a one off.

He had another one last night, a month apart, almost exactly the same as the first one.

I don't know whether to take him to the vets or not. He is fine now, happy eating etc. Has anyone else been in the same position? any advice welcomed.

What did you do in the end? It sounds awfully traumatic.

What kind of things could it be & what are the prospects for successful treatment?

I think they have medication for the seizures. Can't imagine there is any other type of treatment. Very distressing to see.

I have a dog that has seizures, I went to the vets after his second seizure as I'd waited in case it was just a one off after the first.

I was given valium for him which reduced the length of the seizure and helped to calm him afterwards, when the seizures became longer and more frequent then he started on daily medication that requires six monthly blood tests. It was deemed pointless to try and find a cause as there are so many things that could have triggered it and I didn't want expensive scans. He was later diagnosed as epileptic.

I've no idea if cats can be treated the same way, but at least having some meds in in case he has a seizure again will be a comfort and reduce the stress on his heart etc. I think I'd visit the vet with him and have a chat, you don't have to have any tests that you don't want to be done on him.

I didn't do anything after my last post as he recovered quickly and has again been fine since.

I was woken early this morning by a banging sound downstairs, and it was our lovely old boy having another fit. It is just less than 3 weeks since his last, so it is obviously going to be an issue from now on. I will take him to the vets as soon as they open again.

His back legs don't seem as strong after this one, but I am hoping over time they will get back to normal.

Oh I can't bear to think of him getting worse . He could be having more overnight when I don't hear him, so I don't know how bad it is.

This happened to one of my cats. Vets said there was little they could do as she was fine after the seizures, and just to keep an eye on her, keep her safe and comfortable and return if she looked in pain/distressed. Sadly for her it was the beginning of the end, but we got to spend about another 9 months with her.

Our old girl started doing this at the age of 14. It turned out she had epilepsy. She had daily meds to control the seizures. They didn't stop them but did make them less frequent. She lived until she was 17 when she died peacefully in her sleep. The only tests the vet did were bloods so not stressful. I do sympathise though the seizures are a horrible thing to witness

Thanks, I spoke to our vet this morning (who is the lovely one that diagnosed my old dog with Addisons!) and we have made an appointment for blood tests on Tuesday when they reopen. Old cat is ok now, so should be ok to wait.

Just can't stop my mind racing with what ifs at the moment.
